According to some of their fans on twitter.

Poll: Is Micheal Mcintyre actually funny?

I didn't know we had one - it wasn't obvious.
Was he responsible for coaching our defenders to repel set-pieces?
We didn't do very well defending corners did we?

I guess it's an opportunity to get someone else in.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Well our attacking set pieces were poor all season and defensively, 2nd half of the season was abysmal. So, hey-ho.

In his first press conference he said that none of his staff would be announced until he was ready to announce all of them. So it could be a day or two yet until any announcements are made.

This really is a decent opportunity to get some fresh faces in with a different ideas for KM.

A set piece coach who can organise us at set pieces in both boxes and is happy committing to a full season rather than logging off once Big Ben chimes in the new year, would be a very good start point.

It’s going to be Allan Russell.

You’d be surprised.

For example, were the second most successful team for getting a shot off immediately after a corner, after Forest (in percentage terms) https://theanalyst.com/articles/premier-league-teams-most-dangerous-set-pieces.

We don’t do so well at defending them. Our total numbers have us in the bottom four, but we’re well out of there when you look at percentages https://theanalyst.com/articles/premier-league-defending-set-pieces-stats.

In short, we performed better in our set pieces than our league position.

We actually created some clear headers and clear cut chances from corners but our defenders didn't seem to be able to hit the target. We gave away so many corners that one had to go in eventually in a game.

A few observations.

1. Some defenders are better at attacking corners than others. Our current crop do not seem to be very good. Putting it another way, players like Greaves and Burgess are very good defensively at corners but lack a killer instinct at the other end.

2. We tend to congregate in the middle at attacking corners. To my mind it is better to attack from a little deeper because this enables more momentum, as well as the opportunity to adjust to the flight of the ball. I also think it makes it more difficult to defend.

3. There was one game where I remember one of our defenders (Burgess?) trying to block the keeper. That just struck me as being a complete waste of time because it reduced our attacking options, and the role could have been performed by one of out shorter players.

Did a season split on a keepers' thread recently about our ability to defend set pieces; we conceded 3 goals from them in our first 26 matches, and 11 goals from our last 12 matches.

I know a lot of our fans have a downer on Muric, but one thing he was good at was taking pressure off our defence at set pieces by claiming high balls into our box.

Agreed, he’s very solid at commanding his box. Telling stats those.

Absolutely right, for all his faults he is a monster on aerial balls. It was so valuable, and a stark difference to Hladky. Shame he was prone to the brain farts, get his decision making and confidence up and I still think there’s a very good keeper there. Won’t be with us though.

I think this is the problem when things aren't going well - we highlight and home in on the 'poor' aspects of our play, and overlook the good parts. So if we have 10 good set-pieces, but one truly shocking one, it's only the poor one we remember.

Does this account for the short corners against us? I specifically remember Chelsea away where they had 2 players go short and nearly scored from every single one, and then they did score from one. Arsenal done the same thing against us, and we just didn’t learn.
