This is quite something to have attempted and seemingly pulled off. They have managed to strike a 4 airbases in Siberia which is about 2000km from Ukraine apparently using drones direct from within trucks.
Initial reports are saying 40 Russian bombers were hit.

Not true - they don’t have the infrastructure to sell it in the volumes they did to Europe, and due to loss of markets (through sanctions) are selling it at a loss. China is even strong arming Russia to pay for pipeline infrastructure. China is very much ‘playing both sides’ and picking up cheap Russian assets and commodities because Russia is burning through liquidity (estimated only a couple more years of reserves left.
Russia may outwardly pretend it’s not hurting, but central banks rates of over 20pc, a decimated stock index, and shortages of things like car and aircraft parts say otherwise. | | | |

They have the world's most complicated set of borders to defend and a big chunk of the only military assets that could be pivoted from one of their fronts to another within 48 hours has just been destroyed.
40 strategic bombers is a colossal toll in one night. This assessment says Russia had 60 to 70 operational bombers in February 2022 (contemporaneous with the start of the Ukraine full-scale war):

There have been other reports of strategic airfields being hit during this war, so 40 is definitely significantly more than half of Russia's strategic bomber strength.
And they were hiding as far away as possible.
A percentage of the top estimate of 70 bombers would be undergoing maintenance at any point. Maintenance is directly linked to Air Hours, so the fact that Russia has moved the bomber fleet further inland due to the success of Ukraine's raids against closer airfields means that the ratio of sorties to maintenance has been worsened previously.
So Russia has gone, overnight, from possibly 50 strategic bombers in active service, to potentially only 10 (depending on whether some of those hit were currently in maintenance).
This is the most significant victory for Ukraine since the sinking of the (edit: not the Kursk- that was the nuclear submarine that sank in a horrific accident) flagship Moskva and neutering of the Black Sea Fleet.
Worth noting that the bombers hit weren't the Mig's which launch the FAB bombs, which were crucial in turning the tide back in the Kursk enclave, but instead are used to launch cruise missiles against strategic targets (or civilian centres, depending on Putin's whim). Significantly reducing the number of incoming cruise missiles will take a lot of pressure off the best Ukrainian air defences (Patriot batteries and similar systems). [Post edited 2 Jun 9:18]

It’s more than that. The EU has bought more oil from Russia in financial terms than it has provided in aid for Ukraine. It is dependent on Russian energy.

I don’t think Putin will be foolish enough to use nuclear, but who truly knows what the b’stard will do.
Given they are on the same team now, maybe America will help Russia out and lend it some of its hardware or even join in. After all, Ukraine did start it according to Trump.

Yeah Trump has lost interest now and moved onto the next thing. I think people misunderstand him, he’s just as likely to turn on Putin as be his ally - Trump only cares about Trump. He went for Zelensky as he saw him as having the weaker hand (he’s an old fashioned bully) but Ukraine stood up to him so now Trump is losing patience with Russia as well. This is 2000km inside Russia, I think it's pretty standard for them to be parked like that. There is no perceived threat at that location and everyone knows what these planes are so no need to hide them from satellites.

Hangers for every plane aren't cheap, yet alone ones the size of the Tu-95. For reference you could only get 2 of those easily onto the pitch at Portman Road, maybe 3 if you play Tetris, but considering you want to be able to react, you don't want them obstructing each other. The sheer space required for covering 40 is massive. You also have to consider if they are always based there. You can't easily make every airfield capable of holding every type of aircraft. A lot of Bombers have been moved further into the Russian interior because of the threat posed by Ukraine so some may not be at their home base.
Finally, Russia probably thought being 4000km from Ukraine and any other Western power, meant that nothing could get that far. |  | | |
