Could win a general election?

With the Labour Party making a disastrous start to Government, the Tories in disarray and Reform whilst popular but unlikely to be trusted to run the Country, is it time to for the Lib Dem’s to really stake a claim over the next 4 years.

Didn’t they once say they would increase tax by 1p but it would all go to improving the NHS.

They also seem very keen to sort the social care problem as well.

Na. The closest they got was under Clegg and then he sold them down the river, which a lot of people haven’t forgotten. The press give them sod all coverage for their number of MPs compared to a certain fringe party too.

no.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Have they said about reversing Brexit? They'd get my vote for that alone.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Closest they've gone is to re-join the customs union ASAP.

We live in very odd political times. The Government of the day are introducing anti-immigration policies despite knowing it will harm their main goal of growth, because some polls and strategists have told them it will win over some people with ‘very real concerns’, even though we’re 4 years out from the next election (and it’s not actually winning those people over). Yet at the same time polls suggest the majority of Brits regret Brexit or think it was a bad idea and approve of outcomes that being in the EU would deliver. But we still can’t talk about that. All very strange.

Very difficult to win. The Lib Dems on current voting patterns could take a few more seats off the Tories, but unless Labour voters wholesale switched to Lib Dems, they'd struggle to make in-roads in enough seats. If it's a partial switch, then they are splitting the vote further and would just let Reform through the middle as they are doing a better job of dominating the vote on the right now with the Tories imploding.

They are more likely to consolidate their current patches than grow in numbers, but it's a common problem. Even in 2010 when they got their biggest ever vote share, they actually lost seats and couldn't breakthrough. They need to get to 30% minimum to think about winning and even that is likely to just be largest party rather than majority.

EDIT:

Just look at how many seats they didn't even break 5% in.

No, it would take a miracle.

The next government will be Labour or Reform (maybe merged with what remains of the Tories).

The next election is probably the last one where Farage would stand as leader so it's critical they are defeated.

Starmer is dull, uninspiring and perhaps not the greatest PM we will ever have but he's a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

Truly impaired.

Brexit is still a toxic subject - we should definitely be looking to rejoin the single market however. Should note that despite the mud thrown at Starmer and Reeves, we have the second fastest growth projection in the G7 for this year. Faster than the Eurozone, but we do need to forge closer ties to Europe for Geopolitical reasons, and at least Starmer has worked on that (albeit upsetting a handful of fishermen).

Did you vote for them at the last election? Because I'm sure that was on their manifesto then? Unless they've changed tack since Mad Vince Cable stepped down.

The fishing communities went all in with Farage and backing Brexit, then have complained about the barriers to market they face as a result of Brexit.

Now they are moaning about a deal that will remove some of those barriers to market.

Possibly it’s the symbolism that it has with an island nation but fishing generates much more interest in the press than its actual worth to the UK economy.

It's one of those emotional triggers that I mentioned on another thread that the right tap into to great political effect.

Everyone writing off the Tories 4 years out from the next GE is bonkers

They'll almost certainly have a new leader by then and I'd imagine a lot of votes will come back when it's a white male again

Sounds perfect as Tory leader.

I was thinking, myself, that he's the obvious candidate setting himself up for a leadership challenge after watching his nonsense fare-dodger heroics for social media likes.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

That was unbelievably cringey

Moderate Reform, ex Tory voters would have absolutely loved it!
