Burnham does come across as a proper Labour man.

At last, some good politics news. Burnham might not have fancied the job, but I reckon he feels he needs to do it now, and one thing's for sure, the bloody country needs it!

Burnham's electable and would frighten the living daylights out of the Tories and Farage. Just what's needed IMHO.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I've wanted to see Burnham as leader of the Labour party for the past 10 years, hopefully he will at some point. I think he would be a shrewd choice, he's a labour lifer and he's a very smart guy. Cut his teeth working for Tessa Jowell, and they don't make politicians like her any more.

He's got vast experience across a number of roles - Treasury, Health, Culture & Sport and I do think he has a broad appeal, which ultimately is essential if he's to be elected.

Got a lot of time for his work on Hillsborough as Secretary of Culture & Sport and pushing through the 2nd enquiry.

Plus, from a footballing perspective, he wrote that rather good biography of that lanky forward (whose name escapes me) who played for England and did the robot thing. It went down pretty well in Essex yachting towns, apparently. Now, what was it called?

Burnham who signed off on several of the largest NHS privatisations, including Suffolk community health and Hinchinbrook?

THAT Burnham?

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

“I believe you do have to take on the right,” Burnham told a crowd assembled on the dancefloor of the Ministry of Sound in south London. “But what’s the best way to do that? Definitely not by aping their rhetoric” (an implicit reference to Starmer’s recent speech on immigration). He added: “We see from Canada and Australia that a strong, confident left, which leans into what we believe, rather than tilting the other way, can win and can win well.”

This will speak to so many people, it certainly does to me. I really hoped we were getting a left leaning labour government but instead we’ve ended up with Tory-lite. The sooner this happens the better

But what’s his pathway back? If he stands to be an MP (general election or by election) he’s clearly not doing it just to be a backbencher. So will Labour HQ approve him as a candidate?

Yeah, shows how far right Lab have moved when Burnham is seen as a left alternative.

Still, he’s making some half-decent noises, and it at least shows some signs of life in a completely moribund Labour party.

Noice, I've always thought he would be a cracking Labour leader and was saddened when he stepped away from the HoC for the Mayoral role
