Fish and Chips 15:22 - Jun 4 with 5037 views | Churchman | Lunch with Mrs C in Aldeburgh today after a mooch around. The Upper Deck, ‘admirals’ portion (large) and a pot of tea. Lovely service, clean, efficient, nice little room. Cod and chips to die for. 10/10. Thoroughly recommended - as good as anywhere and a gazillion times better than the pale imitations you get in foreign places like America.

Good man. | |

Fish and Chips on 17:27 - Jun 4 by Illinoisblue | How much cheaper would they have been up Norf? |
Maybe a third less. I dunno. But the city/suburban chippies around here are variable. Some cut costs using frozen fish etc for obvious reason. I don’t mind that so much. Curry sauce up here is excellent with a chippy, but a lack of saveloy is an issue. I don’t hate Aldeburgh, but just didn’t see the fuss. The one on the black shore that burnt down was my favorite for quality and location.

Fish and Chips on 16:25 - Jun 4 by catch74 | Lasts in Snape as a kid was fantastic, think they had vans too. As has been said Aldeburgh F&C on the beach is one of life’s great pleasures - that and a good pint of Adnams. I start getting excited about them both as I come round the bend and see the sign for Suffolk on the A12. |
You are right, decades on and I have never tasted better. Though they were a miserable pair of old boys who ran it and the newsagents there.

Fish and Chips on 18:25 - Jun 4 by Warkystache | I was in Aldeburgh today with my Dad - we didn't bother with the chippy but had a dish of cockles each and ate them on the beach. Lovely with vinegar and white pepper! |
Love that beach. It’s a walking postcard and the light was nice today. There’s huts selling seafood and smoked fish. I don’t like crustaceans so that’s not for me but I was tempted by the latter. I like Aldeburgh with its narrow side streets a lot.

Used to be the potty bar. I’m reading Tales from the Green Man (Tubstall) at the moment about an American serviceman from Bentwaters in the mid/late 70’s. Just read a chapter where he describes the Potty bar then fish and chips as one of his favourite things.

Grand parents had a caravan at the site in Aldeburgh from early 80’s to the early 90’s… many a times my dad and grandad would stand me in the queue for the chips while they had a quick pint or two in that pub. Grandad recalls that I wasn’t the only kid holding a spot, and was the done thing in them days.

Fish and Chips on 16:47 - Jun 4 by Kieran_Knows | I have always said that the F&C from the shop in the middle of the high street are way better than the ones at the end of the high street. Tends to be less people at the one in the middle of the high street as well. |
Owned by the same people I’m pretty sure. Bloke called Kev, ex mayor of Aldeburgh, I used to work with him at BT. He told me the chip shop owner back in the 70’s also worked for BT as a foreman/linesman. And each day he’d allocate the work to the team, leaving 1/2 lads off the books to go down the chip shop and peel spuds 😂

Well, for £6 or £7 you can enjoy a McDonalds fillet o fish meal. Nearly the same thing for a fraction of the price. Enjoy. I’ll stick with the real thing. Each to their own.

It’s getting silly expensive. Our local chippy has taken large cod off the menu as he reckons they’re paying double per box compared to earlier this year and nobody around here would pay £15 for a bit of fish (they were massive though). Overfishing and reduced quotas seem to be to blame, so I can understand why. As we’re back in the Championship next year, I highly recommend Hiks if people are looking for a bite to eat before the match - it’s only 10-15 mins from the ground and has a bit of street parking around it if you’re early enough. Best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/whats-on/food-drink-news/award-winning-chippy-peop (Edit - for the Swansea away match - hopefully that was obvious!) No it’s a walk in place open between 12-2pm. Had to wait about 5-10 minutes - it’s only a small place. That included the clearing and cleaning of the table.

Vic and Dennis Last had the fish and chip shop at the bottom of the hill in Snape, with the village shop next door to it. They did also have a fish and chip van that used to do the rounds round the villages. Happy days back then. I will be seeing Vic's son this coming weekend and I'll try and remember to point him in the direction of this thread - he'll laugh like a good 'un!
