He certainly hasn't. At West Ham he couldn't hold down a place in the side and Moyes was publicly quite critical of him. At Southampton he's been part of a side that finished bottom with 12 points. Don't get me wrong I would take him back, he's a good age and has good experience in the Championship, but had he not been at the club previously I don't think his name would keep cropping up on here as one we should be going all out for. He certainly hasn't. At West Ham he couldn't hold down a place in the side and Moyes was publicly quite critical of him. At Southampton he's been part of a side that finished bottom with 12 points. They saw something until they didn't. He started 7 league games for them and they binned him off after 1 season.
As I say he's a decent player, but I wasn't particularly impressed when I saw him this season. He would be a certain upgrade on what we've got and you would expect him to be dominant in the Champ, I'd certainly be up for us going for him. I just think ultimately he'll be remembered as an upper Championship player who perhaps isn't quite of Premier League quality. If he was I would expect there to be a healthy level of interest at that level for a 26 year old English CM. | | | |

Perhaps I go against the grain but I really don’t see what others see in Downes. He’s a combative , aggressive midfielder who at times loses his head. Maybe I need to watch more of him in recent times but if he’s the answer I’d like to know what the question is
We’re looking at getting back to the Prem at the first attempt and taking this players with us ( for the most) on the “journey” and for me , he’s not one of those who I’d take
One I personally feel we missed out on and it’s to be proven yet whether he can play in the Prem is Tanaka at Leeds. Scores a few , 5 I think last season and runs for England ( not literally)

Lots of players who make the step up to the PL don’t make it. Such is the gap now, there’s a whole bracket of players now who are too good for the championship but not good enough for the PL (would include O’Shea in that). They’ll just keep bouncing between relegated and promoted sides.
Downes would do a good job for us in the Champ, but the evidence is he’s struggled in the PL, to suggest otherwise just seems like blue tinted glasses. | | | |

Yeah, it was clearly a disappointment his time at West Ham. But there's such a fine line between making the step up and not. I think he's a confidence player - remember when he spoke out here about overthinking things and needing to get his head right? I imagine it was pretty tough at West Ham in terms of needing to hit the ground running and if you don't that's it.
I personally thought he ran the game when we played them in the championship down here. Or at least that's my memory of it (Sarmiento winner aside!)

I agree re. that Sarmiento night. They were the better side for an hour of that game and certainly got the better of the midfield battle. As I say he's better than anything we've got in CM which will be a definite focus area for us this summer. Phillips and Cajuste gone (for now at least), Morsy isn't getting any younger, Luongo gone, Taylor feels destined to play a bit part here.
I would expect us to sign at least 2 in that area and would have no qualms if he's one of them as he's proven at Champ level. Debatable whether he can step up IMO, but we're unlikely to be signing proven 26 year old premier league players innit. | | | |

No you’re not the only one. In his last season with us he really didn’t look anything special
to me. I think he would want inflated wages because he thinks he’s a premiership player but considering the amount of starts he’s had I don’t think he’s proved himself.
I think he could do a job in the championship but would be surprised if he would stand out just think there’s cheaper and possibly better options available elsewhere. Next we’ll be looking at Dozzell. | | | |
