What’s wrong with Rachel Reeves 12:28 - Jul 2 with 6165 viewsonceablue

She looks like she is about to burst in floods of tears.

Quite upsetting really although she is not my favourite person but feel a bit sorry for her🙁

No problem with your suggestions at the end.

Of course those unable to work should always get support. But the numbers we are chucking PIP at are ridiculous and not all of them warrant it.

Oh you're stressed? Have some cash! Oh you have a slight limp? Have some more!

I know enough examples *personally* to feel this is not an exaggeration.

But yes, go for the parasites at the top too. No problem.

Anecdotal evidence does not trump empirical.

We've spent the past 14 years giving out kickings to the disabled and targeting 'those who could work'.

What's it's done is caused a spiralling bill whereby people with conditions who COULD have been help to rehabilitate, live better and work(even if it's just part time) are denied that opportunity for the sake of some short term numbers and this, what could have been simply managed with some basic support then turns into a much more expensive thing to support.

Today's 'just a limp' is tomorrow's serious mobility issue if we don't support someone with it.
Today's 'stressed' is tomorrow's full blown breakdown, anxiety related disorder or actual psychosis. Not making reasonable allowances(and offering support for it) costs MORE.

Austerity is a false economy.

The spiralling welfare bill reflects this.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Absolutely this, spot bloody on.

Other examples for the hard of thinking politicians and members of the public alike - not granting people PIP who need it means they struggle to do things themselves which they really need help with, so injure themselves and end up in A&E at worst, or in the long queue for NHS physiotherapy at worst.

Also a reminder unfortunately necessary for some re hidden disabilities.

Given her post after - Kemi probably spotted it and went after her. She doesn't seem like the best person in the world.

Getting dangerously close there to telling people with mental health issues to just get a grip.

Truly impaired.

Being disabled is EXPENSIVE. Disabled people often need an additional degree of support just to be able to run on the spot financially. Removing these supports will ultimately exclude more people from working rather than 'encouraging' them to work.

Naysayers often only see people walking in the street looking ok & have no idea about, eg, the grabsticks (decent ones are quite expensive & break regularly) in every room; essential special diets, extra laundry, assistance with ordinary tasks, extra heating, the time & expense of transport to frequent medical appointments miles away etc.

You can say that about a lot of the Labour Government.

After 14 years of having a government that could literally do anything and never got challenged, it’s refreshing to see that so many of these mainstream media people are now suddenly bothered about politicians taking responsibility for their actions

To be fair to her, who is up to the job? Who on earth is qualified to do such a wide ranging job? You can't just be an accountant, or an economist, or a politician. You have to be able to cover such a huge range of issues and the country is literally hamstrung by several years of mismanagement - it is at this point an impossible job. Ultimately she is paying the price for being a woman also with much of the commentary misogynistic and disrespectful.

Having now seen the clips from the Commons, gotta say - what a ridiculous mountain has been made out of a tiny molehill.

I'd describe her as just emotional - she's hardly in floods & sobbing is she. Many others have shown emotion on front benches before - anger, upset, amusement, boredom, distress - & not had the weight of the nation clobbering them for it.

I disagree with her policies, but having a go at a politician for being human is both despicable & short-sighted.

I agree. I watched the whole encounter on the BBC and it was not even obvious to me that she was particularly emotional.

In any event, it is rather refreshing to come across a politician with a little bit of vulnerability because the vast majority are so over-confident that they never get knocked back by things which would turn us mere mortals into gibbering wrecks. Lis Truss perhaps takes this to extremes.

As it is, she seems very chipper this morning.

I did read that she had just had a blazing row with the speaker Lindsay Hoyle. So could be a reaction to that or at least that row would not have helped. Impossible job really. Balancing the books when there are so many demands for money has always been difficult since ww1, but since the mid 90's has been very tough, total government debt is is almost 10 times what it was 30 years ago.

"One analyst told the BBC that financial markets seemed to be backing the chancellor, afraid that if she left her job then control over the government's finances would weaken.

"It looks to me like this is a rare example of financial markets actually enhancing the career prospects of a politician," Will Walker Arnott, head of private clients at the bank Charles Stanley, told the BBC's Today programme.

"I think the markets are concerned that if the chancellor goes then any fiscal discipline would follow her out the door and that would mean bigger deficits.""

I imagine they are rather more concerned about the additional $4trn of US debt that Trump is trying to get signed off than Reeves showing a bit of emotion…
