What’s wrong with Rachel Reeves on 14:36 - Jul 2 by Kievthegreat | An example of how less civilised our politics has become: In 1854, Lord John Russell broke down & wept at the despatch box, at the collapse of his Reform Bill.
MPs were largely sympathetic, cheering until he'd recovered, & reports referred only obliquely to what had happened.
I prefer that to some of the gloating & close-camera footage we're getting now. — Robert Saunders (@robertsaunders.bsky.social) 2025-07-02T13:10:26.419Z |
Ah, see those were the days when men were men, and were able to openly show emotion before their peers! As well as be honest about their untenable position.

I haven't seen the footage yet, but surely it's quite feasible that KS wasn't fully aware of her state in the actual moment?

Possibly, as she’s behind him. He did look at her occasionally as part of the ‘looking round to rally support’ schtick they all do. We’ll see in due course. The danger at the moment is they’re vulnerable to calls of incompetency. Anything that makes a bad impression (even if it’s for understandable reasons) should probably be avoided. If she wasn’t in a good frame of mind, she probably should have sat out PMQs. That could be the biggest error in all of this. Who knows.

Well the last couple of Chancellors managed to trash our country’s credit rating and there was a lot less furore than this. Non story for me - social media is turning politics into a pantomime.

Also don't remember them crying as they were doing it But according to bluecoin Reeves is weak for crying over a personal matter. Utter berk

I'm sure like most people who have ever had a bad day she thought she could put a brave face on and soldier though. Sometimes you can sometimes you cant, on this occasion emotions got the better of her. It happens.

I'm amazed we have any new candidates prepared to stand as MPs considering the threats, incl. death threats to themselves and/or their families; the abuse & potential stalking, esp of females. Even more so with the increasing proliferation enabled by reduced moderating on social media platforms. Respect to all those of all parties who do have the guts to put themselves forward. I wouldn't, however much pay was on offer.

Exactly, terms like "Quivering wreck?" a blatent misrepresentation and also are individuals not allowed to get upset about things, is that a sign of weakness? I'm a 50+ year old man who has cried publicly at work, either due to a family issue or when I was suffering a mental wellbeing issue. I'm not ashamed by it, and in fact am a very public advocate of mental wellbeing in my organisation - and that people should not be judged for a show of emotion. It's the assumption that because someone is upset at work they're obviously not "up to the job" or are are considered "over-emotional" especially if they are female. And don't even start me on real men don't cry . . . ffs. [Post edited 2 Jul 16:28]

What’s wrong with Rachel Reeves on 14:30 - Jul 2 by baxterbasics | Probably because she's been working hard for months to figure out how to reduce the out of control benefits spend only to have her policy smashed to a worthless nothing by the MP's behind her and her custard-backboned leader. Now she's going to have to think about tax rises instead and be even more hated. Actually has my sympathy for once which is rare for a chancellor of any colour. |

I would suggest that crying in public while trying to do your job is the very definition of being strong and leading. Anyone who sees crying as lacking strength should take a long hard look at themselves.

I think, on balance, I prefer a chancellor who's upset about something in their personal life to one who gleefully trashes the economy or openly gets a stiff when they're giving a kicking to poor, sick and disabled.

Spoiler alert: penalising people on benefits has ultimately led to us paying out more benefits and spending more money. Why? Because people who were before maybe being able to live their lives and often get out to to work with some state support now don't have that, have become weaker and more vulnerable and need level of support which is generally far more expensive. Austerity is a false economy. I say we should crack down on actual scroungers taking public money and offering no return. Like the directors of the utility companies, for example. No problem with your suggestions at the end. Of course those unable to work should always get support. But the numbers we are chucking PIP at are ridiculous and not all of them warrant it. Oh you're stressed? Have some cash! Oh you have a slight limp? Have some more! I know enough examples *personally* to feel this is not an exaggeration. But yes, go for the parasites at the top too. No problem.
