Having looked it up and it is 1977, it finished 1-1. I was at the game, but remember nothing about it. Great picture of Beattie and football as it was.

It must be the 77/78 season. Town wore Umbro shirts in the 76/77 season. I only know this because I was at the Liverpool game in 4th December 76 and was in the crowd, in a photograph of Ray Clemence catching the ball, closely shadowed by Paul Mariner and Trevor Whymark. The photo was later used as the front cover of the match day programme, v Man Utd on 3 January 77.

It’s from back in the pre premier league days when football grounds were out of bounds to women and children because every ground was a war zone.

The demographics of Society really have changed enormously

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Poll: With Evans taking 65% in Huddersfield, is the Banter Era over?

Anyone noticed the beat lookalike in the crowd just behind him to the right and up.

And Allan Hunter in the centre, just below the middle, a couple of rows above Tony Jacklin in a red jumper!

60s and 70s. I suspect before that most fans wore jackets and ties, as they also would have done at the seaside or going out in general.

No replica tops in those days either. We got them as kids, but I can’t remember any adults wearing them.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Is that Marcus Evans in the crowd? And also, why is Paul Cooper in with the fans and not in goal?

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

Football grounds were not out of bounds to me as I was growing up. There was actually more women attending Portman Road as a percentage than most grounds ant that time and it always felt safe there. But demographics, terraces gone, no facilities, no berk shouting on the PA before the game, heavy pitches (though PR was the best) and general feel etc have all changed. Most of it for the better.

Football violence? It wasn’t everywhere all the time. Most places were fine and you learned where to be and not to be, to keep it down if you were away and in with the home supporters. And when to leg it if you had to. It was all part of it and a lot of fun. Loved it. Lots of happy memories.

Maurice Gibb to the left of Tony Jacklin, with Marcus Evans behind, standing next to a youthful Liam Gallagher. Kenny Everett a couple of rows behind them partially shielding Barry Took.

Who says I lack imagination!

They must have been wonderful times with Ipswich doing so well, in an era where this was possible. Football is safer now and there have been many improvements, but many aspects have and are getting worse, to the point the Premier League is of little interest to me nowadays.
