How would you feel about a UK Identity Card? on 17:27 - Jul 11 by Ryorry
You *cannot* do that when a new 10-year reissue with new photo is also required, nor can you do it at a local PO. The *only* option for this is to send a hard copy of form D1 and your current DLvia snail-mail to the DVLA, confirmed by 2 of their agents in Swansea, as I posted a couple of weeks ago. They got the documents from me 15 days ago via 24hr tracked RM, and I’m still waiting for my new DL to arrive.
Just did a normal renewal (10 years renewal) online - prompted to check by your post.
I'll say this - what a pain the arse. My phone isn't upto checking my ID on the govt app - so I opted to verfiy my ID online - they wanted me to match a date on when I opened my current account - month and year - from 15 years ago ffs
Went onto my bank online - but statements only go back 7 years. Ended up using the Credit Karma thingy - which tells you.
I know I'm not technically at the forefront of IT but am still way ahead of most oldies I know...

I live in Germany prior to brexit I did not need an I'd card under the freedom of movement then afterwards I had to get a ID card as everyone has to have one , never been stopped and asked to show it, great for parcel collection proving identity to banks etc renewable every 10 years same as my German wife's has my photo on it and my address and under what circumstance I am a permanent resident of Germany the only real difference is mine shows my nationality The card is absolutely useful in proving age address right of residence etc
The Personalausweis is an interesting one, especially given the usual German aversion (thanks to the Nazis and the Stasi) to giving over any more personal information than is absolutely necessary. The Germans clearly trust the system, despite their usual suspicion of monitoring/tracking.
If we're going to continue with the terrible act of gerrymandering that is Voter ID, it needs to sit in place alongside mandatory ID cards, to minimise the risk of disenfranchisement.
Pre-Brexit, an ID card would have been a useful alternative to a passport for Schengen Area travel as well.

The point I was making (or trying to!) is that you **cannot** do that online - or at a PO - if you **also** need to do the 3-year age renewal procedure at the same time. OldFart found exactly the same.

Is that not an odd attempt to challenge my assertion that the continent isn't dominated by Reform-like parties? I am aware of those you list but they don't amount to domination of course, or indeed something close to it.
I don't agree with your characterisation or dismissal of the support for ID cards but respect that your views are strongly felt.
Well, clearly I don't think it was an odd attempt. Otherwise I would not have pointed all those instances out, and I think you are underestimating the threat to be honest.
I was watching Nick Robinson interview Pat McFadden, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, the other evening and he closed with a very melded opinion about how Labour have to take the influence of media on board and how, although Reform is having a much more detrimental effect upon the Conservative Party, listening to the mood in the nations might not change policies but does have an effect on implementation. That is, good things will take longer and cost more (my assumption here) and some unpleasant aspects of public life will get more attention than, I think, they deserve.
Macron is facing this problem too but in France it is an almost equal three way split between left of centre, right of centre and far right. The so called populists may not yet dominate the votes in all nations but they don't half jerk everyone else around.
I think there is no possibility of physical ID cards ever being introduced, not least because of the backlash in the right wing media, as happened about 15 or so years ago.
What is on the table, however, is digital ID. Provisions for this were included in the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 which received Royal Assent in June. They follow proposals that the Tories originally had in mind.
This is what one law firms says about the provisions. Note in particular the last two sentences.
"Digital ID The Act creates a more structured system where providers of digital verification service (“DVS”) can be certified within a trust framework. The DVS trust framework outlines rules and codes of conduct when providing DVS, and a DVS register through which organisations can apply to if they are certified by an accredited body as compliant with the framework. Once registered, the DVS provider will receive a trust mark to enable public recognition. The DVS also establishes an “information gateway” for public authorities to share personal data with DVS providers so that the individual can receive the DVS services; but only if the individual requests it and the disclosure does not breach data protection legislation. The hope is that this will allow better digital ID solutions across different sectors to improve interoperable systems, while easing the administrative burden of the existing paper ID verification process for business and public services. However, the Act goes to lengths to stress that this is not a mandatory national ID system, so the digital ID system is purely voluntary."
I might add that I have a Spanish digital certificate which enables me to access securely various government services such as tax. I obtained this by attending the local council and proving my identity, and the digital certificate is embedded in my computer.

The passport is too cumbersome/precious to carry around all the time.
Solvable - I've got an Irish passport and you can get an optional portable passport card with it.
They could do something like voting - require people to have verified ID which may be a number of things they already have, and if they haven't then have a government one.

Pretty strong support then on the notoriously leftist TWTD forum, with 98 votes counted:

Yes, I've noted that my 'against' vote together with the 'strongly against' ones is about to be enveloped by a Pac-man style bite on the pie chart - boooooo....

Leftism is authoritarianism. You for one are always going in about how people “must” do this or “be made” to do that when it comes to climate.
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
