Despite still being sceptical about the mass push to electric cars, and thinking the tech needs a generation to improve, and even saying as much in a discussion here a few weeks ago, I just bought me a Nissan Leaf.
I can charge for free at work, and doing the maths, this will save me more that the monthly payment, so a no brainer really.
I have a long history of only buying what I can afford in cash at the time, so sub £1000 banger after banger, drive them into the ground then take them to the scrap man. Some not even lasting a year. This is the first time I ever got into debt for a car, which I've always been reluctant to do. On this, quite eye opening how all car sale firms are now basically finance brokers who happen to throw in a car with the deal.

I was a banger addict.
I'd find a car with 3 months MOT for £25 and thrash the hell out of it knowing it would be scrap.
All those who paid £1000+ for a car only got 4 years max B4 it rotted.
I got to drive Rovers, Mercs, Jags for little money.
I realised after a few years I was killing cars, sending them to their funerals at the scrap heap.
I haven't driven a banger for over 20 years.

Nah, that a consumerism thing not a woke thing. If you were exceptionally nice to the salesperson that would have been a woke thing.
I’ve bought cash for my last few cars, but you’re right. Once cash got you a good deal, but they’re much more interested in signing you up on a finance plan these days. “Payments are only £x per month sir”. Oh yeah, and then the deposit and the option to buy, and you end up paying 25% more than the price. They just seem to want the depreciation covered and then the car back. Which is fine of course, it makes new cars affordable and is a good way for them to shift more new cars.
Not so interesting fun fact - I don’t know whether it’s the same now, but Port Talbot was the only place that used to be able to make the new lighter steel used in the panels. It was revolutionary at the time (we’re going back well over 10 years). I suspect that’s no longer the case. |  |

This is the way it's gone the last ten years isn't it?
I'm probably the second highest paid employee at my workplace, of about 90 staff. There are young lads who work on the warehouse floor coming in with nearly new Audis, BMWs, Mercs. Because up until last week I always refused finance and only bought what I could afford, I've been rocking up in a tatty 16 year old Nissan Qashqai with one window taped shut because the mechanism broke.
But then I have kids at home and rent to pay, most of these other lads are living with parents, probably complaining they don't have enough money for their own place.
Rather than an actual finance deal I took a cash loan and paid outright, which overall was the cheapest way to do it. Will take me three and a half years to pay off, the battery warranty should still be in place at that point which was my main concern. Always feared a car dying before I had paid up, which was my main concern with using finance. | |

I have the opposite problem. I usually buy cars for around the €1000 mark and run um into the ground.
But between now and the winter I have to buy a heavily used big 4WD jeep for work.

Thats exactly what I did on the demonstrator electric Citroen, they wanted a whack on PCP so I bought it on bank loan. As a demo car it was 30% cheaper than new.
So far so good, running costs are low. Tyres bit more expensive. |  |

When the car dealership is paid to funnel consumers onto worse deals and hides that relationship from the consumer. Just like PPI, it's hard to feel bad for finance companies trying to pull the wool over people and getting caught out.
Also a reminder that you should NEVER use any of those advertised firms. Just look at the relevent page on Money Saving Expert. There is a form to download and send to the finance companies for free and it takes a few minutes. |  | | |
