Indeed, what determination and a winning mentality, literally putting her body on the line for the team.

In Aberdeen on Friday I was using a pedestrian crossing by Canal Drive and noticed that some wit had, with what looked like a fair degree of work on a metal sign, eradicated the 'C'.

Tongue in cheek remark ?

And before anyone accuses us of childish behaviour I would like to point out that in the Colin Moulding's guide to Swindon booklet that accompanied the second XTC album he had a photo of the sign for the Public Library where a carefully aimed stone had taken out the 'L' in the first word. Someone had reproduced that photo and included it as thousands of inserts that were put into LP sleeves and sold around the World.

taken out the 'b'?

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I guess there are differing degrees of fracture because I am sure it wouldn't be possible with most and I presume medical professionals will have assessed the risks involved with continuing to play with a minor one.

As for the rest of the thread Bungay Swimming Pool had a sign where someone had removed the second m, the g and the final letter.

sure i remember kieron dyer scoring a goal after breaking a leg, but this was minutes after, rather than a whole tournament!

must have been a hairline fracture to be possible, but still would have been incredibly painful, massive effort of will to carry on for as long as she managed

Amazing and to think some diddums in the men's game couldnt play because they had a tiny broken metatarsal in their foot.

I don’t know how she did that. When I was about 16, somebody’s boot took a very small nibble out of my shin (the bigger bone). God it hurt at the time. I thought he’d busted it, but it was fine. Carried on. I actually carried on playing physical sport for weeks after. Somehow when playing it was ok but after each game or activity (training, running, gym etc), the pain and aching would bite and it wasn’t funny.

Eventually I went to the quack/hosp/xray and basically was sentenced to non-contact exercise for about six months. The shin was infected and unless I did as I was told, it’d be the table and knives for me. Months of being flogged up and down a swimming pool followed (the school had one and the animal of the Olympic swimming coach). Avoiding impact sport or stuff like running and it resolved itself.

I’ll never forget how painful it was. Shins hurt and given her problem was infinitely worse and she played a whole tournament with it, hats off to her. That’s real grit and determination.
