We're missing Burns 15:34 - Aug 9 with 1244 viewsWestcountryblue

The issue we've had since Burn's ACL is that the balance of our midfield hasn't been right. Philogene, Clarke, Broadhead, Hutchinson, Szmodics and Chaplin (to a lesser extent) are all diminutive ball carrying midfielders. Size doesn't always matter, however, i'm not sure we can carry 4-5 in the team at the same time.

It been evident for the past 10 months or so, that we don't have any wide players or 10's who can go shoulder to shoulder, and in the Premiership the contrast was particularly stark. Often were going up against 6ft plus stacked wide players who were operating up and down the line, with the likes of Clarke and Philogene bouncing off and unable to contain them, envitably putting the defence under a lot of pressure.

Seeminly, the issue has leaked in the central midfield. Azor isn't Morsy. His skill set and qualities are as an interceptor and screener, not an enforcer. Cajuste will help us considerably, but we do lack a talker, leader and an enforcer type, alongside a more physical set of wingers.

We have to address this quickly, as i can see the same issues as last night really hurting us this year.

Literally azor's stats are way better than Morsy. He won almost everything last night and was mostly stronger than the opposition. Burns is bit the answer. Lower championship quality at best.

He should prove to be as good off the ball, but I don't get the impression he's going to dictate much or be as good on the ball.

They are different players. Azor is a screening midfielder, Morsy is a box to box enforcer.

Burns might not be the answer - however, the point was we need a player with similiar quaities, not 5-6 diminutive players of the same size and make up.

My worry is will Burns return anything like the player he was? He’s been out so long, just hope when he returns he’s just as good

How long is it going to be before Ogbene is fully fit? Judging from last night he’s going to need another month at least. And Burns back by Xmas? You’re right, though, the connections and passages of play have been missing for a while now. Lot of work to do.

Looked like he was running through treacle last night and was completely cooked at times. A little concerning to be honest, as he had a nasty injury.

Ogbene and Burns have both had very serious injuries. Both rely on speed and it’s quite possible neither return to the level they were before.

Hopefully not the case but that could be a real problem for us.

We certainly shouldn’t be all that much with all our expensive upgrades.

Burns has pace and can press well, has a lovely cut back or cross on the deck but also a good amount of flaws. No real left foot and he can’t dribble by anyone like the tricky 10s we’ve bought in to do so. Ogbene is supposed to be the physical winger anyway. Burns has been knocked off the ball fairly easily at times as well, see Leicester equalizer at PR.

I like Wes but with a clamor for the likes of Burns and frustration for some of Greaves over Burgess people are really indirectly having a pop at lasts summers business. These lads will be playing, we spent top dollar on them.

Yet he didn’t come to take the ball off the defence, a key part of our play it out from back….

I was a little surprised he started last night, as he looked somewhat off the pace against Charlton a week or so back, understandably so.

I guess our limited options, plus his physical presence (in a game that was always going to be a scrap), put him in the starting 11.

Why even bother to watch a game of football... just follow the stats. Why dd i ever think Morsy was the answer? Thank you.

I agree we miss Burns. Clarke seemed much better on the right in pre-season. I think we need to start him there and bring Ogbene on (unless Ogbene can play on the left). That then leaves us needing Broadhead or Al Hamadi on the left (if Ogbene can't) until Hutchinson or Philogene or a replacement is available.

I agree with you on this. I think Burns was already being considered by McKenna ladt season to drop to a deeper role, (right wing back). I'd like nothing more than to see him flying down that right wing again, but its a massive injury to get at this stage in his career when maybe hes just beginning to lose that edge as a winger.

I was pondering this earlier - i wonder if a three of clarke, Chaplin and szmodics would work?

Personally I think having a wide left player cramps Leif for space. I would give Humphreys a go as a widish midfielder who inverts . In the pre-seaon friendlies Philogene was playing an inverted role on the left, which seemed to work well, gave him a free role.

Longer term Ogbena should prove an upgrade on burns. You are probably right we will start to see the best of him in Sept hopefully.

Be nice to have Burns option again though.

A lot of players seem to get better when they're injured.

Burns is a good player but let's be honest, last season he, like a few others, were not great and got a bit found wanting in the PL.

His mistake vs Everton was awful.

Don't get me wrong, I like Burns and he's better than the Ogbene we saw the other day.

Burns and Ogbene are very similar profiles.

We miss Omari, not Burns.

Clarke was better than ogbene on the right in pre season as he was able to spin some players ala hutchinson so it didn't matter if he was back to opponents half, he got himself free

Ogbene is similar to burns in that his skill is running into space. The only way we will see the best of ogbene is to hit balls through for him to run onto. The constant johnson drilled balls onto ogbene at the halfway line was doing my nut in.
