We appear to not be willing to sell Broadhead for a fee rumoured to be in the region of 7 million YET and holding out for a higher transfer fee for Omari (maybe 40 mill?)

Understandable considering the loss of quality players such as Delap, Morsy, Axel and Burgess which has left our squad short in certain areas, especially in CM and striker. AAH is fine as 3rd choice IMO (wish Akpom would sign soon as making me anxious).

Which begs the question, why was Morsy allowed to leave so easily? I think that he still had a year left on his contract and I don't think we even received a fee for him.

Obviously I've got nothing but admiration for Morsy and everything he did for the club and everything he helped us achieve, however it seems a bit foolish of the club to allow him to go until we had more CM signings in place, even with Cajuste back on loan.

Taylor does not appear to be good enough, not sure if Humphreys is a decent enough 3rd CM or not. Otherwise it just leaves us with Cajuste and Matusiwa which surely isn't going to be enough. My only thought is that the club thought that the signing of HH was nailed on, in which case it's backfired big time IMO.

So my question is why has Morsy been treated differently to other players?

Because he wanted a longer deal on good money when he was likely going to be phased out of our starting 11.

That's fine, so allow him to move on. But only - as we are seemingly doing with Broadhead - when we have signed a replacement.

We couldn't just let him run down his contract otherwise he would have been able to go on a free next year and that would have been calamitous!

Oh.

Yes, last night shows what a baffling decision it was to let him go. For free. Without sufficient replacements. Maybe the inefficacy of our midfield last night may yet tempt the club to push the boat out to get a Hackney in, or similar. In which case, fine, maybe there is no longer term harm done.

But having got fewer points than Luton in their premier league season, having lost our best and most important players, some core of strength, solidity and reliability is what is needed to stop the downwards momentum. In this division, I really believe that Morsy would have been that. But ho hum.

Morsy rested from International duties to support Ipswich promotion push. He probably had good offers from other clubs during this period (Saudi were linked a couple of times). The club rewarded his loyalty by letting him leave early and allowing him to bag the transfer fee.

We have his replacement in place. Yes, we need another CM, but the Morsy successor is here, and playing. Just needs a little more time to settle in.

the replacement was matusiwa and we did sign him before letting morsy go, but maybe we should have got a replacement for luongo/phillips as well!

i think a big difference with broady is that we're selling him to a rival, we would have been playing hardball more if derby were signing morsy...

Because as Club Captain he may well have been on a "match highest paid player" contract?

That seems the most likely explanation, to me.

He also became a bit of a lightning rod for criticism over the rainbow laces campaign, and then more generally as a high profile Muslim player, and we don't know how much the online hate may have crossed the line to credible threats, or whether his family or he experienced abuse in real life.

He played well at the start of last season, but then struggled. The club may have taken a decision that they could spend his wages better elsewhere, and that it was best for him and his family to be able to relocate to a Muslim country.

There could also be a degree of showing the current squad (and possible future signings) that we will do right by you and your family as a Club.

The club has put his interests first, seemingly as pay back for what he contributed. What I don't understand is surely Morsy would have had a similar offer this time next year?

I find it strange we can offer Young god knows what at 40, yet couldn’t offer Sammy anything. Letting him and Luongo go as it currently stands is utterly baffling. One of those should have still been here and looking at last night both could have still done a job and probably bossed that midfield.

None of that matters - he was paid handsomely here, it was negligent to let him go without replacements in the door, it cost us last night and depending on how fit Jens is and how quickly we get replacements in may well cost us further.

It seems over generous and naive, not sure many other clubs would leave themselves so exposed.

A midfielder is here. We could easily argue he's the replacement for Phillips. Or Luongo. Or Cajuste, as he's only just returned himself. There is no question we are very light in central midfield. Too light.

He would have been happy to stay, terms just couldn’t be agreed. He basically said so himself.

morsy had a year on his contract, probably at better wages than young has on his year.

luongo would have been useful today, but he'd have been eased out by new signings, it's a 46 game season, not all on the first game

I doubt what we would have been able to offer him would have come anywhere near what he is earning on a 2 year deal in Kuwait. Worked for both parties.

Young is reportedly on £50k a week I read somewhere. Sammy is 5 years younger. I’m sure something could have been done. He said he wasn’t expecting to leave this season himself. Luongo could do a job too and as for being eased out, I don’t see too many new midfield signings coming as yet. As it stands we are well weak in this department. Strange letting them both go with no cover sorted.

I hadn't even thought about Luongo. Same thing applies. Even if we let Morsy go for whatever reason, we could have still played a bit more hardball with Luongo and not let him go until other central midfielders were signed.

We need either of them at the moment. So it seems a baffling decision to let both go. I know Matusiwa has been signed as Morsy's replacement, but it's not about that, it's about being very light on numbers in those positions and Taylor not being good enough.

As you probably agree.

Fine. So does Omari, apparently, but we're not letting him simply walk. Midfield is so light in numbers at the moment - we should have kept him until we had sufficient depth.

I still wonder if we could have done some deal with him to placate him for the final year. Some incentive bonus as club captain- not team captain. I do think we were too soft on this. He was happy to ask for contract extensions until he got the offer he wanted. Think he could have played an important part this season even if he wasn't starting.

I don’t see Azor as Morsys replacement really. At the moment we don’t even know if he is Taylor’s replacement. Not enough to go on from him as yet. We do however need some steel in there and someone who can carry the ball. Cajuste is good but he ain’t no Morsy.

ITFC being light in midfield is not Sam's issue. He had offers and wanted to go. There is little we can do about that. Its happened, we move on, and the challenge now for the likes of MA is respond to it.

I think the problem rests with Town possibly feeling very confident of securing Hackney, and that hasn't happened.

Have we orger MF targets we are chasing, because I dont think we could have offerered him anymore than we have already done. The simple truth may well be he only wants a PL club and nothing else.
