Crucial couple of weeks in store now 21:40 - Aug 14 with 3241 viewsSomethingBlue

We do not currently have a squad that can dominate the division. All the tools are now there (if they weren't before) to make sure we've constructed one going into the international break. We will never have a competitive advantage like this year's and it is absolutely essential for the club's future that we make it count.

We've certainly lost the cheat code that would have got us up – not much magic in this team now. I'm not catastrophising and think a lot of people have been way too overwrought over the past week but I do think we need two or three really excellent signings if we are going to look better than a clutch of very good competitors.

Do you think Southampton and Leicester will also lose their “cheat code” players? Fernandes, el khannous etc.? I don’t see superstars in some of the other teams, but the two teams that came down with us do seem to have less noise around their star players - of course it might be that I don’t follow them as closely.

I agree. Factoring in the upheaval this summer I think it'll almost be a bigger achievement to do it this season than it was in 23/24.

Our patience and support is also required, and going to be tested, over what is likely to turn out to be a rocky couple of months before we start seeing the fruits of KM and the coaching team's labour.

Stick with it boys and girls!

Next couple of weeks will go a long way to showing where the club is headed.

Bearing in mind Brett Johnson's "leak" about £100m of player sales, we're not far off that if OH goes. Now we need to see some serious investment again because as it stands if we don't go back up this season next summer will see the loss of Cajuste, Akpom and Kipre leaving another rebuild job.

Was that Brett Johnson "leak" ever proven to be true? How would he know, well in advance, which players we'd be selling and for how much? Omari's still technically here and that "leak" was at least a month ago.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Hackney, Doak and Ivanovic through the door, please.

I'm not too concerned about left back, if Leif gets an injury Young, Humphries and Johnson can all do a job there. I still think Clarke will come good and if Philogene stays fit we have two top Championship wingers.

But CM does still look like we're very light and that needs addressing ASAP.

I cannot stand the “do a job there” nonsense

If Davis was to be out for a few months, we would need better than the “do a job” players you mentioned

Sign a proper left back who can compete with Davis

Yes the Johnson email was genuine.

Brett Johnson, like most of us, knew who our most scalable assets were after relegation. Delap, Hutchinson, Davis and O’Shea. We’ve done well to keep two of those.

Obviously he would also have been aware which of our players had relegation clauses in their contracts. And what their market value was.

I would settle for “just” the first two

Everybody is obsessed with CM. We have a Swedish international who was arguably one of our best players and a player who was playing in lge1 in France and has better stats than all of the rest of our midfield last year.

People are right to be concerned. That midfield pairing is a player that needs to get up to speed with Championship football and another who has had no pre-season and regularly failed to complete 90 minutes last season.

Added to that the drop off from those two is stark. We're clearly light in midfield and it needs sorting asap.

My biggest concern is how robust some of the players we have are. I love Jens but can he do 90 and play sat - tues. do we need to manage Youngs exertions? How regularly do we find Philogene injured? Ogbene coming back from long term injury. Is Leif 100%? Add the already injured players in Townsend, Burns, Harry Clarke and we already look a bit thin on the ground at the start of the season!

For me we need a Matt Holland or Sam Morsy - an ever present central midfielder in particular because as much as I love Jens and Azor might be that player we need more depth.

I see. Well he says "up to £100m+" which literally could mean any amount!
And other than Delap he was essentially guessing.

He's not giving an exact figure or clues as to who would be sold, as many were inferring.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Obviously none of those players are as good as gone, we've just signed some of them.

Only one has proven themselves to be better than Championship level though, and he is now in his twilight years. I don't care about the price tags, we were paying premiums as a Premier League side for untapped potential. McKenna needs to tap it if we're going to see their worth.

This season is arguably the manager's biggest challenge as a manager since joining, to oversee the transition in the squad, keep the hunger in the dressing room that we're so used to reading about, and create another promotion winning side.

Personally, I think it's as big a challenge as getting us promoted from the division two years ago when we were riding the crest of a wave. I'm not saying he can't do it, but it's not a given this year.

Most of them have been top performers in the championship. Which of Johnson, Ogbene, Szmodics, or Ashley Young is the one who has proved himself in the Premier League?

I agree 100% that the issue is getting them playing to their potential and as a team.
