I do think the narrative some said about the markets we were restricted to as a PL club were a bit laughable! We literally played them in pack out PR in league 1 as well, it's not like they were always hanging around the PL.
The net spend isn't even that different by my count. Not saying it will necessarily work but I mean that looks quite a PL ready doesn't it! | |

Perhaps lol but I think more a continuation of their work in the previous few seasons, as they recruited heavily from the continent while we were doing our double even. They've walked the opposite path no doubt in where to recruit from, and I still think Xhaka's a stunning signing (one I don't believe we'd have been able to attract tbh, if positions were swapped). |  | | |

I saw Sunderland a few times on tv last season. They played nicely, albeit at Championship level. Their best player was Bellingham, but they had a lot of good young players and had a good team ethic. They have a terrific yoof system.
They have effectively tried to replace that team. Like you, I’ve only actually heard of two of them. Maybe they’ll be a lot better than those we signed and as top players they’ll be good enough to bond into a team quickly and make a go of it.
Maybe they won’t. If their signings were that good, why would they sign for Sunderland beyond money? Certainty of staying up? Keeping their salary if relegated? Love of the area? Who knows.
I would love to see them do it for my two mackem mates’ sake. They might and at least they are giving it a real go. Do I think they will? Given the chasm, I doubt it but you never know. |  | | |

Lots of players with top level experience - might work - might not, but it’s a logical, cohesive strategy, everyone can see and for a long while that EFL players can’t now make the leap and need time, at best you need a mix.
But that elite experience, it’s not desirable, it’s been essential for a long time.
When Somerville ripped up the EFL and struggled, being much better than anything we had, there should have been a clue.
Strategic chaos was and remains our MO (sadly).
Same people, making the same decisions, equals the same outcomes .
When you’re in the EFL with the biggest budget in league one, and players dropping down to work with Cook who are levels above league one, then it’s easier.
When you need a long term vision, a plan, and the networks and skills to execute that plan (we did have the money) that’s obviously harder.
Watched Bournemouth last night.
They sold £140 million worth of defenders to the best teams in Europe.
The new left back they have .., what a player! The centre half again, looked right at home, that’s the level of recruitment required. Just to have a chance.
The left back looked SO good…, whatever they and Brighton, and Brentford and Forest and Wolves do, they don’t two levels above how we operate.
The gap is wider today than it was 18 months ago.
We can pretend it’s not true, because it feels bad, or accept we need some changes and better support off the pitch.
The results don’t lie.
