£1 to shop a shoplifter on 11:32 - Aug 16 with 947 views | ArnoldMoorhen | I saw Mark Thomas at the Fringe last night. He was incandescent about this. "For a pound? A POUND?!?!? Mind you, that is 15 Spring Rolls, to be fair!" He suggested that the Police might be discovering the bodies of grasses in the deep freezers.
£1 to shop a shoplifter on 11:37 - Aug 16 with 913 views | OldFart71 | I reported a vicar stealing food from Iceland. The headlines in the local paper the following day said " Clergyman caught stealing. Is this the way to Reykjavik"

He's great, Mark. A few years ago I spent a long time opposing a certain quasi-corrupt development by Boris Johnson, Joanna Lumley and Thomas Heatherwick, and Mark was a great ally and help.

But if you employ security, they cost more, and then you also have to pay their sick pay etc., and fill out all sorts of paperwork when they inevitably get injured in the course of doing their job. Much easier/cheaper if you feel that you can encourage your customers to turn on each other in return for a shiny pound coin. Want to cut theft? Stop with the price-gouging.

I have never really understood why people care if someone nicks a packet of crisps from a Tesco. These big supermarkets rip us off already with their ridiculous profit margins + it's really not coming out of my pocket. Like you say, if it's an independent corner shop or something, then I get the anger.

Tesco make a profit of between 6-7% each year. I am not sure that is ridiculous and/or people would notice a great deal if their weekly shop went up or down by 1 or 2%. In a way the issue is more how the supermarkets have suppressed prices for so many years, pushing independent shops out of business and lowing the quality of what we all consume…..and to some extent encouraging us all to eat and/or waste too much food.

I would rather live in a democracy with people like Mark Thomas on the fringes, discovering bad law and bad policy, and both satirising the ridiculousness of it and also tenaciously keeping on about it until he gets actual change... ...than the Post-Democracy we live in now where the Home Secretary could just declare him a terrorist and put a stop to his actions. He is gobby, arrogant, gives the impression that he might be a bit sniff-fueled at times, but he has done a lot of good over his 40 years in comedy.

They calculate the loss and work it into their pricing structure. So it does come out of your pocket. Just another way they are ripping you off.

On the other hand, most large supermarkets have dramatically cut down on the number of staff on check-outs, and have presumably built in to the equation the cost of the increased risk of shoplifting.

Sorry, I meant Maurice Glasman. A bit of a dick, unless I’m muddling him up with someone else.

That's perhaps a bit harsh but he did get an invite to the Trump inauguration and speaks to Steve Bannon on a weekly basis. https://observer.co.uk/news/politics/article/labours-trump-card I suppose you could say he is a bit of a political maverick with his idea of Blue Labour but I am not sure there is any harm in looking at things from a different perspective. Haha! Oops! Glasman a bit of a dick? Let's consider the evidence: He invented the political philosophy of Blue Labour. I rest my case, your honour. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Labour Much of the most Faragian elements of Starmer's recent pronouncements has its roots in Glasman's ideas.
