Quick quiz question: Why would the Rights Holders of Jet Set Willy be acting illegally (or at least unlawfully) if they sold the original version of Jet Set Willy, as originally packaged, in the UK in 2025? (Just to clear up the obvious one, it's nothing to do with copyright or rights holders.)

....I do remember it having some sort of colour code on a grid that you had to enter to get it to load. Dunno.

That's the one. It came with a piece of card with an X and Y axis grid references. Each box on the grid was coloured one of four colours. After loading, the game would boot to a screen asking you to enter the sequence of colours corresponding to a random sequence of grid coordinates. The text was extremely small, and the colours were all incredibly dark shades so that black and white photocopiers of the time couldn't render them clearly distinctly, to make the card uncopyable, and the game "unpiratable". Within six months, somebody, somewhere in the UK sat down and recreated the grid on a sheet of A4 paper, and wrote "Blue" or "Red" etc in each corresponding box, in black biro. This was then photocopied and made its way around the school playgrounds of the country. The unpiratable game had been cracked! Nowadays it would be contrary to the Human Rights Acts which have subsumed the Disability Discrimination Act, to sell the game with this copyright protection "device", as it discriminates against the blind, the partially sighted (who wouldn't be able to read the co-ordinates) and the colour blind (who wouldn't be able to distinguish between some of the colours). | | | | Login to get fewer ads

And if whatever programme it was did load correctly, the 16K* RAM Pack would inevitably get joggled and the thing would crash. * That's right kids - kilobytes, not megabytes or gigabytes. We could write entire programmes which fitted within 1024 bytes of space, on the basic model.

Pah. I give you dial-up on a shared local area network. If you managed to get 25 seconds every 10 minutes when it wasn’t engaged, you found the top speed was 27kb/sec!
