Someone described Town’s performance as ‘abject’ 18:00 - Aug 23 with 851 viewsunstableblue

That’s what we’re dealing with?!

Yes the result and performance weren’t good enough, as McKenna states we didn’t have connections across the pitch, and our attack was ‘random’ at times due to how deep Preston sat.

But we had 72% possession
An XG of 1.34
15 shots, 2 on target
They had to resort to 6 yellow cards, and 14 fouls
We won 53 duels to their 41
Etc etc

It wasn’t good enough, but give Preston some credit.

Saying that’s an abject performance is the vibe that doesn’t help.

Exactly. A long way from abject. I would say pedestrian.

Very reminciscent of league one sides adopting the low block against us wasn't it?

It took us a while to work out ways to overcome that too. We might need to get used to it, that isn't the last time a team is going to play like that against us.

Confidence is low as a result. I'd hope a few early wins would be able to get us going, so this start is disappointing.

We desperately needed to blag a few more points early on.

I'd call it predictable - we are FAR too easy to defend against at the moment. Did any of us really believe we'd get a goal from about 65 minutes onwards?

I'm really not sure what we do with Clarke, but he is a waste of a place at the moment. Philogene wasn't much better, but at least he puts a bit of effort in, and he has a little bit more time to impress, having missed half a season with a bad injury.

And as much as we all thought Hirst would be great this season, he's looked really rusty so far, not able to hold up the ball when needed, and not able to stretch defences on his own like Delap did.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Exactly this

And it made me feel that we're going to be in the champ like we were in league one. Completely dominant with sides not wanting to play football with us.

We solved that before we will solve it again.

Whilst you’re right. Not sure you have any credibility when it comes to criticising people for talking completely hyperbolic nonsense about town.

It'll help if we didn't gift opposition a goal headstart.

Yes, a good way to think about it.

Preston not only deployed the low block, but they did it with some pretty good quality defenders and quite a lot of belief/energy from their start to the season.

If only Clarke’s sublime cross had been turned in by Hirst, when we did open them up.

The last ditch block to deny Clarke a chance summed up their commitment to defending.

McAteer has to do better. And Philogene need to stay on side when out through by Clarke.

But we’ll need to find more guile and better patterns/connections. Akpom and Cajuste gave us drive.

You can have all the possession in the world but it don't win games been effective in both 18 yd boxes does. And we are not effective at all.

The OP was talking about performance. You’re talking results.

In football, results and performance are connected, but not perfectly correlated, a team can play brilliantly and still lose, or play poorly and still win.

Today was a poor game, we underperformed based on our squad and ability but had more of the ball and created more than Preston. Preston won a penalty and then relied on our lack of ability to break them down rather than taking the game to us. Preston earned the points without doubt don’t get me wrong, but based on balance of play etc it’s arguable whether they deserved them but we just did not do enough.

One piece of interplay between Davis (who started well but overall had an off day) and Philogene in their box summed up the day, Philogene just played it behind Davis, and the moment we lost.

Agree possession not a great marker, albeit it’s much better to watch us win with higher possession than lower. I’m sure we’d still have preferred 3 points and 40% possession today!

Be interesting to see if there is any other current serving manager in the top few divisions, with a record that stands at x3 wins in their last 30 league games, or if any manager in the last 20 years has ever survived a run like that, remained in post, and turned it around..

I'm now on the train home. I would say that 15 shots with only two on target (and I can't remember them, so suspect they were not close or good) is pretty abject.

For a team with pacey players it was, as someone just said, pedestrian. No urgency in movement or idea.

McAteer shot was probably the best chance; Hirst had two near the goal, one was well defended the other he should do better.

Two shots form Johnson, one blazed, but one was en route but blocked.

Taylor’s was a good chance and we know he can strike them. But just to close to keeper and too weak. He did connect well.
