What we need still 08:03 - Aug 24 with 1178 viewsDorchesterBlue

I’m generally struggling to think what we need from this final week of the transfer window.
No doubt movement in and out.
We need to get this right, our only big financial advantage we will have over other teams!
Let’s hope we get our targets finally and make it count

We need a dominant central midfielder, some serious competition for Hirst and an attacking player who has that little bit of X factor. Those are minimum requirements – there's also an argument for proper left-back cover and a better solution at right-back than we currently possess.

Ideally you'd make some tough decisions. Jack Clarke doesn't look at all right here. Maybe a big moment or two in front of the north stand will sort it. But something is off and if we could find a taker & bring in someone more suitable, I daresay we'd do that. But we are short on time and to a large extent may have to go with the hand we've dealt ourselves.

A central defensive midfielder, and someone who can play at 9.

Those first 3 you've stated are exactly the three I thought when I read the OP.

More bite
Greater urgency
Snap-shooting practice

I thought large parts of the game were a fairly complete Ipswich performance against slightly lesser opposition. Overcoming the press, forcing them back and probing around the box. We just missed every chance on goal we got and let the time run out.

Edit: All of this can come from the training pitch, without having to change personnel.

Players who really want to be here. Who want to work together as a team. We have done exactly what the joke big boy clubs have done in the past. Buy individuals and havent been able to integrate them.

I agree with every word of that.

The last point about full backs is a good one - it's not drawing too much attention in all the transfer discussions, but with our full backs (albeit different roles each side) so important to our play it is a position that isn't working on either side at the moment. Davis hasn't got into form so far, Johnson is a pretty limited player, though in fairness Young has looked better when coming on.

A recruitment policy that identifies the right players that can be intergrated into a successful team. That would be great.

I don't think that's particularly true. I've not seen any evidence of shirking on the pitch or unwillingness of players to support one another.

A certain unfamiliarity, perhaps. But that comes from trying to merge what's left of the old team, the Prem signings and the new introductions. To use an infamous term, "gelling".

But our biggest single issue yesterday was failing to get our best chances on target. Up to three or four good opportunities squandered high or wide, which would have been enough to get points from the game.

The problem is our squad is already bloated in some areas. Yes we could do with left back cover and a better right back, but we already have Young and Johnson at RB with Clarke injured ( again ), and we have Townsend injured long term, but still on the books and the payroll.

I think a LB loan may be possible but at RB I think we are stuck with what we have unless there are any late takers for Johnson, which I would think is very unlikely.

For me, its the three positions SB mentions which are key, but again when talking about the AM position, the squad is bloated with options and injured players, many of whom don't look like particularly good fits for us.

It all looks a bit messy to be honest, lets hope we can get the right ins and outs done over the next week so that come September 2nd the squad is looking in better shape for the months ahead.

Yes, it's very clear. The frustration at the moment is that the first two of those have been very obvious requirements since about March when relegation became unavoidable.

Many reasons why they haven't happened yet but, with a slow start, the fear that we might manage to waste a really good position starts to gnaw away in the background.

re: Jack Clarke there were a couple of games at the end of last season, Everton away in particular, where he looked confident and a threat and I hoped he could take that on into this season. It doesn't look like it though, too lightweight and lacking in confidence even in a team low on it - and yet he still made our best two opportunities in the first half.

A creative number 10 and striker are really the only tow requirements. Have to agree.

All this talk if CDM we literally have arguably the best one in the championship. He breaks up okay brilliantly and is beginning to pick some very good passes.

There is a big difference between “what we need still” and what we will get.

If by the end of the transfer window the club hasn’t signed a striker and a central midfielder then some serious questions need to be asked.
