Ofgen predictably increase prices for winter 11:03 - Aug 27 with 796 views | RIPbobby | When people obviously use more gas/electricity. Very sneaky after reducing the price the last 2 years during the summer. Weak excuse to. Do not trust society/government. Lining their own pockets. Disgusting behaviour. Mind you it's bringing them closer to civil war when the English fight back. [Post edited 27 Aug 11:04]

Ofgen predictably increase prices for winter on 11:27 - Aug 27 with 675 views | bsw72 | Hmmm. From a pure economic perspective this is supply and demand in play. When demand for gas and electricity rises, such as during colder months, prices naturally tend to go up, especially if supply is constrained. Worth noting that many other European countries have retained more control over their energy markets, often through government intervention or regulation, which helps keep prices lower and more stable. Blame privatisation.

if we hadn't gone so slow on renewables for so many years, they would be a lot lower by now (though privatisation is obviously a key additional factor)

Ofgen predictably increase prices for winter on 11:32 - Aug 27 with 648 views | DanTheMan | The price cap rise is driven by an increase in electricity balancing costs - adding around £1.23 a month to the average household bill. These cover the costs incurred by network operators to ensure a stable electricity supply, for when there is both too much power and too little power in the system, with the level set by the National Electricity System Operator. Other factors include costs associated with the extension of the Warm Home Discount (WHD) scheme (£1.42 a month). Looking forward, the WHD and forthcoming Debt Relief Scheme are important first steps to reduce the costs of bad debt by focusing support on those struggling to pay their bills and with historical debts from the energy crisis. TL;DR - Costs are due to network expenses and support for low-income individuals.

To paraphrase Mandy Rice-Davies, they would say that, wouldn't they? Society nowadays is about punching down. Maybe less profit should be given to share holders with more used to keep bills down.

Completely agree, repeated gvmts have failed to plan effectively for the future and this is where we find ourselves. On the plus side progressive parties like Reform are a big supporter of renewables who will help save this country, once they get rid of those pesky boat people . . . as boat people are the biggest threat to our future. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It would if we weaned ourselves off gas, but that means building a hefty amount of infrastructure. The reason our bills are as high as they are in the first place is that our bills are essentially linked to the cost of gas.

People being able to keep warm and cook food saves the NHS money mate. Funding stuff that makes life easier for the hard up in general saves the NHS money. Austerity is a false economy,

The energy price cap is to maintain the profitability of energy companies.

If you were starting a country from scratch the last thing you would do is put those in the hands of private companies. The fact that, at the very least, we do not have a publicly owned energy, water and broadband provider is ridiculous.

Railway is gradually being privatised as franchises expire. Unsurprisingly there haven’t been any cuts in fares where I live. Energy and water (see Welsh Water) would also be just as expensive unless the govt committed to subsidising it - no chance with Reeves and Starmer. A half way house of state run companies competing with the private sector won’t work since we sold off most of the infrastructure. Funding infrastructure purchases, subsidising wholesale energy etc is hugely expensive - EDF lost over EUR 18bn in a year post nationalisation. There needs to be a honest election choice - tax rises all round and renationalisation, even Corbyn failed to cost much of his plans. Time for some grown up politics.

Govt schemes costs have increased higher than the drop in wholesale costs. Miliband is energy minister.
