How the squad is shaping up 13:12 - Aug 28 with 1083 viewswrightsrightglove

Presuming we get Furlong and Nunez, and that Johnson is off (maybe) we’re looking like the below. Appreciate Furlong is covering two positions, and Wolfie might be off and be replaced. Looks like one more CM and then improving on anything we’ve already got if possible. Obviously the below 1st & 2nd team isn’t set in stone and will rotate but just an indication of the expected squad

Palmer
Young - O’Shea - Greaves - Davis
Cajuste - Matusiwa
Ogbene - Szmodics - Philogene
Hirst

Walton
Furlong - Wolf - Kipre - Furlong
Nunez - ?
McAteer - Chaplin - Clarke
Akpom

Button, Burns?, Humphries (loan?), Taylor (sold of another CM comes in?), Baggott (loan)

Right Winger and Striker are a must.

Azor cover would be ideal.

2 More minimum, could see up to 4 come in though

We know the squad, we don't know who or how our strongest side will look, with reality being excluding a very small number of players, none of the group have delivered anything for Ipswich, that makes you think you can rely on them for a guaranteed starting position.

Still suspect there is a little bit of time of sticky performances ahead before we start to shape up with a consistent side.

Why a right winger? We've got four on my count-

Ogbene
McAteer
Burns (when back this winter)
J Clarke if required

What we classing as a beast here ?

Azon is small but seems a bit unhinged. Would that count ?

None of which particularly fit the system...Remember we need an Omari replacement

There is a reason we have a near 20 million bid in for a palyer who plays in that position.

Do we even know what system we are trying to fit? If it's the one that we used for the double promotion and got the best results from last season, then Burns is the system and Ogbene fits it perfectly as well. But so many new players don't fit that system that maybe we are looking for a new one so don't know which of those players are what we want.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

We just bought McAteer- maybe the system is changing?

And yeah we have that bid in... for a development prospect who has also played as a striker

Egeli and a striker and I think we're pretty set.. not sure where that leaves Al-Hamidi, he's also injured currently so wouldn't pass a medical.

Furlong covers LB along with Young

Could see a few loans out last day or two such as barbrook, Humphreys and Baggott

Taylor probably ends up staying, Townsend and Burns possibly not registered with the latter registered in January for an injury or sale

Imagine we are looking for a similar type to Omari.

We played Clarke there all through pre season and then vs Saints and vs Preston. So I doubt it is return to the promotion season. We will want a left footed, pacey, ball carrier who likes to come inside with the ball. I'm pretty confident of that.

I'd argue that Clarke does if we are now playing Davis as an inside attacking full back.

Though that begs a question of whether that gets the best out of Davis.

That would be my reading of it. If Woolf stays, another loan for Baggott. AAH would probably have gone if not for his injury, so I can see another striker coming in and us not registering AAH and then selling in Jan. I can’t see Humphreys or Taylor going though unless we get in another CM.

I imagine McKenna "perfect" squad would something this (players not on our books in caps):

Palmer/Walton/Button
FURLONG/Johnson
Davis/Young
O'Shea/Woolfenden
Greaves/Kipre
Matusiwa/JAMES
NUNEZ/Cajuste/Taylor
EGELI/Ogbene
Akpom/Szmodics/Chaplin
Philogene/Clarke
IVANOVIC/Hirst

Assuming no further exits, I think we'll be in for three for players, even with Furlong and Nunez through the door.

A large chunk of Davis' success was the general floaty-ness of Broadhead and Chaplin. One of those is now in Wales and the other isn't starting.

Think we'll be seeing much less of a reliance on Davis, and therefore he'll probably look less productive.
