As flags appear across England and now Wales, Jonathan Freedland and his guests look back to a street gathering in 1780 which also used flags to get a message across. Organisers of "Operation Raise the Colours" say it's about promoting patriotism and is non-partisan but the appearance of flags on mini-roundabouts, motorway bridges and lamposts has been met by opposition from anti-racist groups and by differing responses from some local authorities. Eleanor Lawson is a BBC News reporter in the West Midlands where flags began appearing earlier in August. Ian Haywood is Emeritus Professor in English at the University of Roehampton and he has studied the initially peaceful protest and petition which became known as the Gordon Riots.' Hopefully we are too late into summer for any riots. My tuppenceworth is that nationalism is generally a bad thing, it puts in boundaries and excludes people when they are probably already in a vulnerable position but patriotism is generally a good thing if it is a consciousness that applies to everyone in a land where they want to be, have something to contribute to (even if others do not appreciate it) and are prepared to accept the rights and duties from which the benefits from being in that land flow. It was an unfortunate choice of words when they formed the party, maybe they didn't want to get confused with Superannuated Pension Payments ? Incidentally, I met Kate Forbes a few weeks ago (I've been getting uppity about the scarcity of dental practices in Skye and Lochalsh) and found her surprisingly personable and practical. Often the case that on local matters when party politics are put to one side then you see who can pull together on things.

The Long View: Flags on 10:21 - Sep 2 with 425 views | Swansea_Blue | Not all nationalism is isolationist and exclusionist. It’s possible to want the best for your country whilst also looking outwards and building strong relationships with other nations for the benefit of yourself and others. That’s the principle of the EU for example. Narrow minded nationalism based on placing yourself above others certainly isn’t a good thing though.

And of course there is not a hint of anti-Catholic feeling remaining, or any blind impulse to raise a tricolour or sing a rebel song at the drop of a hat now.

Pity their patriotism ends there and those from far off lands, well 22 miles to be precise, are considered more important than our own. And no I'm not a far right racist either.

You may not be a far right racist but you seem to have swallowed their rhetoric. What do you mean by "are considered more important than our own"? It's a nice sinister soundbite

Perhaps he's referring to the big US multinationals that underpay tax in this country to the tune of several billion? They're 22miles plus off these shores and successive govts have clearly valued them over their own citizens [Post edited 2 Sep 15:56]
