I love him. But is he in danger of being dropped? 1 penalty goal from 4 games is not an ideal start, and with Akpom and Azon chomping at the bit, I wonder if McKenna will give one of them a go against Sheffield United…

He looks like he is trying too hard and forcing things to happen, his first touch against Derby was consistently poor.

It will come good for him, but I think it is the same as it is for all the team, the weight of expectation is sitting a little heavy at the moment, things will click . . .

I recall Delap going 6 games without a goal or assist last season until the Chelsea home game came along. Strikers have dry spells. Good that he has some competition knocking at his door though.

Yeah funny how delap did nothing before the chelsea game, then played a worldie and then did nothing after that game, where did he end up in the end?

Think it's worth holding off somewhat on judgements on individuals until the front four as a whole gets a bit more cohesive. None of them are playing well at the moment, which probably indicates it's a collective issue rather than about one player or another.

Hirst is quite a capable striker at this level but I do hope we've found an upgrade.

I think he’s probably got a few games credit in the bank. He will benefit from having a settled 3 behind him. I haven’t seen enough of Azon to know whether he’s going to be an upgrade on GH or not

We made a big show of offering him a big new contract amidst PL interest in the Summer, think it's unlikely we'll have massively changed plans after 4 games.

He’s looked crap so far this season so you’d imagine he’ll get dropped soon if his form doesn’t pick up.

He needs to stick to what he’s good at, holding the ball up and laying it off for our other attackers, pressing defenders, and making clever runs off the ball to create space for others. Looks to me at times like he’s trying to copy how Delap played last season which obviously isnt his game at all.

I wonder if Mckenna has asked him to play more like Delap?

Since his stomach curdling ‘dis is what i do’ he’s actually done nothing.
With the game vs Derby being possibly his worse game in a blue shirt.

I love him as a player normally but this season he’s been miles off the pace.

Agree with all this and like you, I do rate him as a player normally. Its like starting the season as the 'main' number 9 has had a negative effect on him.

Hoping the upgrade isn't Ivan The Terrible.

Think our recruitment indicates that we are looking for better. Hirst has suffered most from those who have departed. Good player, but I think we are looking for a forward to score 20+ goals a season, which isn't Hirst's bag. Our forward line suddenly looks very, very different and potentially much, much better.
