I love him. But is he in danger of being dropped? 1 penalty goal from 4 games is not an ideal start, and with Akpom and Azon chomping at the bit, I wonder if McKenna will give one of them a go against Sheffield United…

It's what he does!

but seriously, I think he's suffering from the "lack of connections" behind him. Chappers, Burns etc knew his game.

Think akpom will be used across the line but maybe not in Hirsts role. Can see Azon being sub for quite a few games as yet. Although Hirst needs a better game than last sat

I genuinely see Hirst move back to being the impact striker off the bench once Azon is fully integrated.

I just don't rate Hirst as a ideal striker for a team pushing to get to the Prem. Yes I know he was here before but the players behind him aided him greatly. As painful as it is to say him and the ginger one from 'that' club are a long way apart in terms of ability in my humble opinion. I actually wonder if we made some enquiries over the summer for him.

I think he’s great if the 3 behind him are scoring. I do think he’s trying too hard, seen how Delap has played and the trajectory he’s on. Needs to relax , focus on his strengths and bring others in to play - easier said than done, especially in a team that’s forgotten how to win.

Since his stomach curdling ‘dis is what i do’ he’s actually done nothing.
With the game vs Derby being possibly his worse game in a blue shirt.

I love him as a player normally but this season he’s been miles off the pace.

He was actually a better fit for us than Delap (system and playing wise).

For me, he's not been playing enough and it shows, he's a little rusty and trying a tad too hard. Needs to get back to doing what he does best. Harry, hold the ball up, bring others into play. He never was 'greedy' like Delap (neither are bad things) and I always thought, with our style and approach, Hirsty was a better fit. Delap was great, has a lot of attributes but I felt played more for 'himself' - again, you need a striker that is greedy and selfish in some respects.

He'll come good. He needs some good competition and also someone to share the load with.

And me. I’d like to see a bit more of Axon before firming up that view, but it feels like it could go that way.

He’s looked crap so far this season so you’d imagine he’ll get dropped soon if his form doesn’t pick up.

He needs to stick to what he’s good at, holding the ball up and laying it off for our other attackers, pressing defenders, and making clever runs off the ball to create space for others. Looks to me at times like he’s trying to copy how Delap played last season which obviously isnt his game at all.

Got a feeling that Akpom will score a lot of goals off the back of Hirst's graft. Once the connections are made.
Hirst can occupy two CB's at times. He's been a bit isolated imo.. And we are missing the telepathy that Chaplin, Hirst, Broady, Burns bought to the forward line. Which will obviously take a few games to achieve with the new lads..
Hirst starts for me, atm. With Akpom in behind, ahead of Szmodics, if KM deems him match fit.
Hirst has suffered from Szmodics being less of a link up player compared to say Chaplin in the 10.. Imo....... They are all learning together atm.
Always see Hirst as more of a "foil", than an out and out goal scorer. Or at least a bit of both. Shouldn't be judged on goals alone.

Another player who's currently trying to be different

When you watch hirst of two seasons ago he held the ball up, sprayed the ball around and brought others into the game. The number of times he's trying the delap first time turn is really painful as he's not very good at it.

Similar to davis, we aren't using him how we once did and this in my view at least is what's causing him problems.

a niche perspective

Nobody grumbles at the end of a game because a super hard working, super strong, fantastic finisher makes a goal out of nothing, on the grounds that he's not a good fit. Delap totally played for the team. Yes, he had to make something out of nothing all by himself, but that was because he had no service.

Hirst has been extremely underwhelming this season. Sure, that's a great fit, because so has the rest of the team. This ain't Cinderella. I'd prefer to have a striker who scores goals. Like most of the rest of the league seem to have. Kieffer Moore has been very much superior to Hirst so far this season. At least we finally have alternative options, one month too late.

I think Azon handled Matt Clarke better than Hirst.

My observation with Hirst is that either he has the measure of a central defender, completely and utterly, and wins everything against them, or he doesn't, and wins precious little. It's rare that he occupies the middle ground between those.

I’d say there’s a very good chance.

Delap barely pulled that turn off, so not surprising to see GH fail at it.

That said the times vs Derby where he looked at his worst was when he was attempting to hold it up, ball bouncing off him, poor first touch etc

I think the time he looked worst was when he had a free header, 5 yards out, and cushioned it into the goalkeeper's hands.

The fact we are so slow in our build up play really hasn't helped Hirst at all. He was effective when we were on a counter attack with players running off him.

We won't see much of him if we've got Philogene dancing on the spot with the ball, then attempting to cut in and floating the ball in/having a shot.

There's obviously a very good player in Hirst, but I thought he was a mixed bag against Derby. His first touch at times was way off and he was having to go two yards to retrieve the ball.

Akpom is obvious quality, and Azon comes with, potentially, a very high ceiling.

It will be an interesting one.

Think mixed bag might be being generous. Can't remember him doing anything all game. He really struggled last season and we definitely need better if we go up.

The sample size in games in tiny. We need more from all the forward players. We certainly need him to rediscover his ability to control the ball. I don’t see that as a need to drop but there is going to be plenty of rotation isn’t there, that’s the point of having Azon. I don’t see a need for a big debate over not starting, that’s is a natural part of horses for courses and if he could have some players around him actually able to create and take chances the whole debate goes away quietly !

I hope so. Not because I don't like him, but I'd like to think EVERY player is in danger of being dropped if they don't deliver. That's the only way we'll go back up.

Absolutely. Was an awful attempt. Although someone on here told me it was a hard chance as the ball had on pace on it…. 6 years out, with just the keeper to beat, and nobody putting pressure no. No defending GH there I’m afraid

Hirst had a great pre season and really wanted that #9 shirt, got his Scotland call-up and was full of confidence. But there is really fierce competition, and I think he's had enough chances, now he needs to drop to the bench to give Azon and Akpom a shot at starting and Hirst will need to do something great when he comes off the bench to battle to regain the staring berth.
