How many days would be necessary for a nice mini break to Vienna and Bratislava? Starting and finishing from Budapest with the train.
I've seen comments online saying one day is enough for Bratislava, but I don't think I'd like to go to any new country and city just for one day.

Might be worth remembering that Bratislava was pretty much a provincial city until 1993, so it lacks the majesty of an imperial capital like Vienna. Yeah, honestly, you can do the sights in a day. If youāre going soon, itās time to celebrate the wine harvest and drink lots of burÄiak ā young, cloudy, unfermented wine. Delicious. Perhaps you could prolong your stay by taking a winetasting tour of the cellars in the RaÄa district (I'm in Bohemia and we all head for south Moravia - which is similar - this time of year). |  | | |

Both excellent cities to visit
I have spent time in Poprad and Kosice, both very fine places to visit too if you are in the region; take the TEZ train from Poprad station up into the Tatra mountains if you have the opportunity..... simply stunning
I would recommend visiting in December to catch the Christmas markets, mulled wine and genuine festive cheer..... a step up from a muddy "Winter Wonderland Experience" in Kesgrave |  | | |

I have been to Vienna twice and I think 2-3 days is sufficient, it isn't a particularly large city, classical music and architecture are of course an inherent part of the city's culture. A nice city to walk around, queues typical for the more famous cafes.

Couple of days would be fine for both. I adore Slovakia and would recommend extending your day if you can. Agree on venturing up to the Tatra mountains, the trains are excellent and very reasonably priced. Even the wine area just to the north east of Bratislava in the Carpathians is worth the trip, and there are lovely little towns like Smolenice that'll give you a real taste of the region. BanskĆ” Å tiavnica and BanskĆ” Bystrica are also worth a detour. Agree that BurÄiak is worth trying, but steer clear of too much slivovica - it's lethal. Got to have some vyprĆ”Å¾anĆ½ syr (fried cheese) while you're there. | | | |

Iāve just spent two full days (3 nights) in each of Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava (as part of 22 days taking in seven cities).
Do Bratislava as a day trip from Vienna (or Budapest). The medieval city is tiny and it really has taken a long time to not yet recover from being left to rot under the Soviet Union. You will get a feel for the place, contribute something to the economy, but have more time in cities with more to do.
We did a walking tour in each place we visited - doing that as part of a day trip to Bratislava will probably do. |  | | |

Had planned a week in Slovakia this Summer, Father in law sadly dying of cancer this summer put paid to those plans. The plan was to fly to Kosice, stay there a day or two, head West to the High Tatras for 3 days and then a day or two in Bratislava. Hopefully will do it next year. | | | |

having visited all 3, I would say 1 day in Bratislava is ample, 2 days in Budapest (plenty of cheap bars if that's your thing) & minimum 2, preferably 3 days in Vienna if seeing major sights such as the Schonbrunn Palace is your thing. Vienna will obviously be the most expensive of the 3 cities, if budget is a concern. |  |

All three are great cities, been to Budapest a few times, Vienna twice and Bratislava once
I'd fly into Budapest 2/3 days Vienna 2.5 days then Bratislava 1.5 days and fly back from Bratislava

I think from a financial point of view* (as the time I am spending in Budapest is already significant and expensive) this is the itinerary I will go for:
Day 1: Early morning train from Budapest to Vienna
Day 2: Full day in Vienna
Day 3: Late afternoon/evening train to Bratislava
Day 4: Full day in Bratislava
Day 5: Late morning/lunchtime train to Budapest
Should be nice!

I have just returned today from a 2 week holiday and visited Bratislava, as well as Prague and Munich. I spent two nights in Bratislava which I felt was sufficient. As others have noted it is a fairly small city and you can easily see all the sights of the old town in a day.
On the first evening, I visited the Tehelne Pole stadium (which is where the U21 Euro final was held) and watched Slovak Bratislava play FC Kosice. Although there wasn't a big crowd, it was interesting to take in my first overseas football match. | | | |
