Reform v The Greens 08:27 - Sep 7 with 6570 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

Have to say, I'm liking the noises coming out of the new Green Party leader. Seems to be a decent chap with his head screwed on (absolutely made mincemeat of Ed Balls the other day, although I appreciate that's not too difficult).

Whilst green issues are obviously huge, I tended to think that's all they stood for, but I'm now (from hearing a few bits from Polanski) realising there's much more to them (that I like). Particularly over taxing the rich. Could they be the alternative that Corbyn's party wants to be? And could they, under this new charasmatic and intelligent leader, be a challenge to Reform in terms of seats, given they're only one behind them currently?

I don't know why the Beeb (and others, but you expect better from the Beeb) give so much airtime to Farage. It's certainly not proportional to the amount of seats they have - they get way more coverage than the Greens, for example, who are only getting more now due to appointing a new leader.

Unfortunately not enough people care about green issues in this country (not enough to vote for them at least) so if their scope is seen to be wider, could they be the 'surprise package' at the next election? This country is crying out for a decent alternative but I have to say I didn't expect it to come from The Greens.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

To you and me it's a non story flash but you know how it works. Whether he's debunked it or not he's a new kid on the block and the press haven't had their pound of flesh yet. As we speak they'll be scrutinising every social media post he's ever sent going back years. You've already seen the dm making a reference to him hugging his partner. The dm ain't big on the gays, so that's a nice line of attack at some point, especially if he's pro trans rights etc.
I want him to be a positive voice in amongst all the negativity, but he's got his work cut out.

I merely asked what "baggage" he had. So far we've only found one thing (which isn't true). Two, if being gay is baggage.

I wasn't trying to claim anything, it was a genuine question as I really don't know that much about him.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I think the worst thing that the Labour Party could do is split, a broad church approach is the best approach for socialism (like democracy and marriage, a terrible idea but better than all the alternatives.) Starmer is far too centralising in his manner of managing the party though (probably as a result of the phoney claims of antisemitism as all pervasive in the party when in fact it was isolated pockets and the correction was too slow) and a leader with broader appeal to both left and right is needed (not just for the party but for the State and that type of leader is only likely to be found in the Labour Party.)

On the subject of airtime for The Green Party I think the BBC need to be reminded that they gave Jimmy Saville a lot of airtime and look what came out there, they were unbalanced in their prime time entertainment moral sensibilities and they have become unbalanced by Farage in their political sensibilities.

Labour was a broad church under Blair but ceased to be that under Starmer with the fixing of candidate selections and the like. Indeed, it was that control-freakery which led me to leave the party a couple of years agon, and the absolute control of the right at the heart of government has been further strengthened by the recent loss of people like Rayner and Justin Madders and the promotion of those on the right of the party.

I remember Michael Crick saying about four years ago that a lack of plurality within Labour was a danger because for policies to be successful there needed to be a variety of views involved including those prepared to challenge. Without it, there is a danger of groupthink and policies that just don't stand up to scrutiny.

Thus it appears to have turned out if the last year is anything to go by, and it doesn't augur well for the future.

In this context, it is interesting to note that Andy Burnham is calling for more plurality.

And how many times did GB post about that?

WTF? Completely unnecessary baiting on a thread I'm not even involved in. I don't believe I've ever commented on Miliband eating a bacon sandwich. It's irrelevant to the political debate.

There is one poster, who isn't on this thread so I wont mention his name, who often posts that had Miliband been able to eat a bacon sandwich properly then we wouldn't have had Brexit. But it certainly isn't me.

Perhaps challenge me for my political views on thread I'm involved in rather than making up complete and utter bollox on one I'm not.

Div listed. Not here for this sort of nonsense.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Yep here in 2029 we retained the premier league title and champions league under Sir Keiran Mckenna. Lord Ashton has just announced increasing the capacity of Portman Rd to 90000.

The EU disbanded in 2027 after mainland Europe became part of the new USSR.

But Prime Minister Stephen Yaxley-Lennon who is replacing Farage after he failed to attend the last 8 cabinet meetings isn't reversing Farage's decision to join the USSR is he?

He's certainly getting plenty of airtime and speaks very well. Clearly a principled guy and I'm hoping he can disseminate the party's core principles and policies to a wider audience. He needs to fight tooth and nail to be involved in every pieces of publicity that Reform are included in (Question time etc etc.) to oppose their views and call them out for the grifters they are.

His biggest vote winner may well be to really go big on re-joining the EU, be the opposite of the Brexit party and push the benefits of EU membership

Spot on Mr Rightglove

I'm hoping that the media will see Polanski for what he is; an engaging and amusing speaker who is articulate and passionate about his agenda.

Hopefully the invites will come rolling in and he will take the fight to Reform rather than embracing the right wing agenda as Labour seem to have done.

Interesting point on the idea of rejoining the EU.... some number of Brexit voters I know are expressing " Buyer's Regret" about their vote and are beginning to wake up the fact that leaving was an incerdible act of self-harm. I wonder how far along the rejoin/closer co-operation path he will dare to tread
