Just went past a community centre… 17:52 - Sep 7 with 8337 viewsChris_ITFC

… with Union Jack bunting up. Hard to know whether to smile at a friendly, welcoming venue or frown at a place run by a bunch of massive racists these days.

Could conceivably be either, with very little alternative in between.

Very confusing for my little brain to process.

Poll: Right, we’ve all slept on it. Let’s settle this?

Oh good point, that reminds me, he also said anything in a manifesto is an aim, not a promise.

So yea. There's that.

There will be many things he will have to be solid on if he's going to be a serious contender for election. I imagine most sane voters are going to want guarantees on things such as the NHS, etc before they vote for him.

Given everything he has said would a promise from him mean anything to you?

If he gets in and immediately breaks that promise what power do we have?

Lol, yes they will. I would hope most would not want to see a tougher stance on immigration at the expense of the country's infrastructure and services.

I don't mind sad hippies. Much better than daft racists.

Going back to Farage for a moment, he says he speaks for the silent majority. I there is a grain of truth there. Not that he speaks for them but that there is a silent majority. On one end you have the racist element (no redeeming features). On the other end you have the 'progression' at all costs types (at least they are, generally, well meaning, with a few glaring exceptions). Then you have the 80%+ in the middle who know what having any sort of grey area option is going to antagonise at least one of the two extremes. I think there's a big group in the middle who don't give a flying one where you come from but they want our laws to be respected. Don't care about your gender as long as we keep discussions on sex scientific and not ideological. Couldn't care less about what toilet you use as long as there are SOME single sex options. It's not about attacking people or making people uncomfortable. It's about respect and giving people as much of what they want as possible while understanding that when two groups are opposed we need to respect both rather than give one group everything and shout bigots at the other group.

I am with you. Life is too short for arguing over stupid things.

Good to know .

Most of my family and friends in the UK live on Haverhills Chalkstone and Parkway estates and a halting site outside Harlow.

About a 20-25% of um have little interest in politics and rarely vote. They just feel completely unrepresented.

Amongst the others I think at least half of um, if they bother to vote intend to vote reform. I find the idea that multimillionaire, public schoolboy cares about them amusing enough. But at least it gives us something to talk about.

I certainly won't. The sooner we move away from this antiquated and inefficient NHS and join our European neighbours such as The Netherlands, Switzerland and Norway who excel in delivering the best health care for their citizens, the better.

Absolutely. But the NHS is treated like a religion in this country and there are far better health services in Europe.

The trouble is, like the immigration debate there is only ever a binary discussion. NHS or USA Health system.

How does the European system work? People say the NHS free anyway when it really isn't. It's paid for by taxpayers!

You don't think that Labour's failure to communicate, understand or even slightly relate to 'these communities' may have in anyway left a large vacuum for Reform to fill?

i think the government is now engaging with them, but the clock is definitely ticking. housing and waiting lists are two key concerns - a lot of the concerns about immigration really filter back to their kids being unable to get homes, with the majority of social housing tenants in may areas being foreign nationals, and the near impossibility of accessing public services. if the government can build houses, cut waiting lists, cut immigration and provide growth farage will be toast. easy.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

That'd be Norway that uses the same funding method we do, right?

Obviously, things need to change in the NHS to make it better, but tinkering with the funding method as if that magically solves the problems is pointless.

I imagine Reform will win the next election as they are the ones promising to stop immigration and deport immigrants already here. So far, both Labour and the Conservatives have failed to actually explain to the public why we require immigration.

And to blueas, my counter argument would be that Reform got 4million votes despite not even having a manifesto, so the idea that the general public goes through all the manifestos and gives all their policies full thought is frankly ridiculous.

There isn't a 'European system', they're country specific, but some European countries are funded through health insurance contributions (Germany, France, Netherlands, Austria etc). Mandatory payments that come out of your salary. Then the state funds elderly / unemployed etc from general taxes. If you take Netherlands as an example, I lived there and was paying about 7% of my salary annually IIRC specifically for healthcare.

Switzerland was nuts, I lived there as well and it wasn't uncommon for people to be paying £400 - £500 per month for their health insurance. Salaries were higher and taxes were lower as a result.

There's no general European model, they're different and generally have to operate within the context of broader taxation models that make them viable. We couldn't maintain existing taxation rates in the UK and expect people to fund private healthcare on top for example. As you say we effectively fund (theoretically) the NHS through our general taxation and NI, the challenge we have is I wouldn't expect a reduction in them if we reverted to a different model, we'll still pay our income taxes, we would just pay more on top for healthcare no doubt.

Farage did say like himself many people would be happy to poorer as the cost of less immigration.

People still voted for him.

Problem is, the racists mostly don't use distinctive flags any more. They've stolen ours to brandish in their activities. Which, sadly, casts doubt upon those displaying it honestly.

Not sure about "any more". Surely the NF back in the day always used the union jack, i.e. it was ever thus. The difference i guess is that people used to be able to separate the two, and now some don't.
