There are people on here who think O’Shea is better than Wolf on 20:53 - Sep 10 by TheBoyBlue
They're not perfect. But generally we've seemed solid. Apart from Derby we've only conceded a goal a game, which isn't dreadful. We've been struggling in front of goal but hopefully the new signings will change this.
woolfenden et al conceded more than a goal a game in the promotion season, so it's not a promotion deal-breaker. the main problem is we're not scoring enough yet

Yep, got much more of a connection to a Town academy product that played all of his football here than the yo-yo mercenary that replaced him
Which is basically saying I’d prefer to have an inferior team just so academy products can play. If we want to get promoted we have to strive to have the best, and O’Shea is better than Woolfie

This precisely sums up where we are.
It's often said you don't lose games if you keep a clean sheet. Perfectly true, but it may often lead to draws, which is mid-table results. It can equally be said that you don't win games without scoring - and in our promotion season, we scored in abundance, often just outscoring the opposition in high scoring games.
We're not firing up front right now, and that's where we need to improve most. I've been slightly critical about Hirst not being sharp enough up front, but that's not the entire story - he's best at creating chances around him, and our other attackers haven't contributed yet, unlike in previous seasons.
We have a potent attacking line up now, and for me focusing on occasional defensive missteps is not where we need to look. Once we start scoring more freely, we have a solid backline, and that will bring the wins we need.

I think we have forgotten how porous our defence was in the season we got promoted. It was recognised as the weak part of the team - I think we et in 15 more than both Leicester and Soton. I loved Wolfie and was sad that he left, but let's not pretend he was part of the best defence in the league.
IIRC we all thought at the end of that season that we'd need a serious defence upgrade if we were to do anything in the Prem.

the defensive record was just one better than 18th place qpr, we managed 3 of 23 clean sheets at home (strangely, we were better away on that metric)

Question for you, mate.. do you ever watch football or just look at stats?
This isn't a computer game or whatever. Kipre was WB's POTS a couple of season's back.
Sorry, but I think stats can assist, tweak and/or optimise at a higher level, but what the f@ck is wrong with going mostly with a gut feeling or opinion . Bit old school, I know..
Because gut feeling only works if you are lucky, although stats don't always tell the whole picture they do give a good indication of what is happening.

"the defensive record was just one better than 18th place qpr"
What relevance is that? Leicester got relegated once with the best defence in the league.
Ours was 7th best in the league that season, and our attack was the best. That combo will get you pushing for automatic promotion.
We played in a way, especially at home, when we outscored teams where played for 1-0s away from home. If we'd have played at PR like we did away from it, we would have conceded far less goals, but it's about winning games.

i was basically saying that our defence is good enough for promotion, but we need to score more goals
also that not getting a clean sheet in our first 4 games isn't a reason to panic and write off o'shea as inferior to woolf

You're right, it was the 7th best, but it was a long way short of the likes of Leicester and Soton. If we hadn't been scoring for fun we would not have been where were were in the league. My memory is that nearly everyone accepted that we needed to tighten up considerably when we played in the Prem.
We'll never know how Wolf and Burgess would have got on had they remained as first choice pairing - personally i think they would have been found out after a couple of games. McKenna wasn't going to take that risk and brought players in that he thought were an upgrade. That's a managers call isn't it, but much as I liked Wolfie I think it was the right call.

Are you aware that conceding goals can come as a result of a play style rather than being the fault of specific defenders?

let's get this straight, are you saying the following?
conceding goals is the fault of specific defenders when o'shea is involved conceding goals is due to our playing style when coventry's cb is involved
Slightly different when I blame O’Shea for specific goals which have come directly from his mistakes, and you blame Wolf for the defensive record of a team across the length of a season

We conceded 6 less goals than Southampton, and scored 5 more.
It's team style, and how we elected to play in the main - not individuals and was why when we went away from home we could shut up shop if we needed too.
We conceded 25 in 23 away games, and whilst our home defensive record was mid table, we got the most points at home in the league

and none of the 57 goals involved a woolfenden error?!
you can let it go, he's not our player and just about everyone who knows football rates our captain higher than coventry's centre back!
