Don't think this take is "it", I'm afraid. His close association with Epstein was known and should have barred him from any public office

"Because he was well-known and liked among some people who Trump mixed with, and the UK Government was willing to try anything to keep Trump inside over Ukraine, and amenable to a favourable Trade Deal" is the more plausible reason.

Although, now, being "well- known and liked among some people who Trump mixed with" is proving a whole lot more icky than Starmer may have anticipated.

Ten days in to the new parliamentary year and it’s been a tough one for Starmer. This sacking should have happened yesterday, rather than the public backing Starmer gave Mandlson - despite the latter publicly stating there would be more embarrassing revelations!

Suspect the questions about what Starmer knew about this will not go away anytime soon.

Because he’s an incredibly shrewd political brain. And very polarising with people who love him and hate him in equal measure. But the main reason was he was known to Trump and could work with him.

The fact it’s blown up is telling.

As someone who has worked in those FCDO circles, sadly there are appointments made that prioritise certain elements of a persons background, who they know etc.
It’s done all over the world to ensure British relations overseas move as smoothly as possible.

Mandleson was seen as a schmoozer who could help us with Trump. That’s why he was there, nothing more.

The evidence we’ve seen come out in the last few weeks wasn’t known at appointment and the emails weren’t known until even yesterday, but would have been suspected, but that’s not enough to not put him in post.

Not sure we can be held responsible for Trump being elected?

Did I say we were ? I was comparing political cultures as a way of showing up the de jure failings and de facto 'needs must' of political appointments. This whole thread is an interesting read and perhaps the only conclusion that we can draw is that there are no easy answers. There do seem to be some uneasy ones though...

Starmer doesn’t come out of this very well. He is a ditherer, reminds me of Cameron. As you say the information wasn’t available when the appointment was made. Nothing more has really come to light since Starmer earlier backed his appointment, should have been sacked before today.

Oh dear it seems if Starmer has full confidence in you yesterday you are sacked today😂twice now isn’t it.
