The English Football League (EFL) is considering a plan to add an eliminator round to the Championship play-offs, a move that would extend the number of teams in the play-offs to six.

The proposal, which has received wide initial support from Championship clubs, is for a similar format to the one used by the National League, with the team that finishes fifth playing the eighth-place team and sixth meeting seventh in singles ties at the better-placed team’s home ground.

But unlike the National League’s play-offs, which are all one-off matches, the winners of these eliminators would then proceed to two-legged ties against the teams that finished third and fourth, with the winners meeting at Wembley for a place in the Premier League.

Preston North End chief executive Peter Ridsdale presented the idea to fellow Championship club executives at a meeting last week and it was very well received as it would reduce the number of dead-rubber matches at the end of the season, add two more high-profile games to the calendar and give more clubs a shot at promotion.

Good point!

You could have the losers of the semi finals go through to the final.

Not sure it’s a great idea, but that would work.

It's a great league... why do we need additional jeopardy? So what about the teams in 5th and 6th place who won't get 3rd or 4th place with 3 or 4 games to go... but are pretty much guaranteed a play off spot. They'll just put a weakened side out for the last few games to rest their players for the PO's. You can lessen the number of dead rubber games on one hand, but generate more dead rubber games on the other.

It will just increase the feeling of injustice. Isn't the point of getting promoted because you deserve it over a season.

Guess if its all about who deserves it over the course of a 46 game season it should just be the top 3 going up automatically and no playoffs. Personally I do think the playoffs adds a bit of extra spice and I like them. Not sure why 6th should be such a big prize vs. 7th or 8th tbh, Bristol City were 2 points above Blackburn and Millwall in 7th and 8th last season for example. I understand you have to draw the line somewhere though, otherwise the league season becomes a bit of a farce.

If I had my way I would have 4 up, 4 down for each division. Get more fans opportunities to feel promotion and relegation, and distribute the money a bit wider. Top 3 automatic and 4-7 in playoffs like L2.

Extending the play-offs to even weaker teams is a terrible idea. I accept that the play-offs are here to stay, but the 3rd & 4th placed teams should have one-off semi final games at home to the 5th & 6th placed teams, before a final at Wembley. As ever, sports administrators want more games, more teams & more money.

speaking a lowly Norwich fan, this sounds good! Should keep the hope alive for longer (maybe not for us, but someone will enjoy it)

They said top 8, not top 18th ;)

The possibility of an 8th place team getting promoted over a 3rd place team with potentially 20+ less points after 46 matches is absolutely ridiculous.

Why don’t we scrap the league season altogether and just put all teams in a massive play-off competition?

A money-driven proposal thats nothing to do with football.

Poll: Compared to the 23/24 squad how would you rate the current squad (without Omari)

If the TV companies had their way, the actual league winners would be decided by Play Offs, not just promotion.

In the same way as other sports such as rugby league, netball and speedway have sold out.

Ipswich Witches won the league this year, but are not champions… I am now off to Foxhall to watch the second leg of the semi final…

The last 2 seasons have seen all 3 promoted sides relegated immediately. What exactly do they think 8th place might bring to the PL table?
