What standard medicines they shouldn’t be prescribing.

Grand record he has, obviously

It's the lizards.

The perceived wisdom seems to be that the increase in cases on the autistic spectrum is due to a complex mix of 'environmental' factors and diagnosis.

I think there is a large element of Trump doing things such as this to keep him in the news.

So it's just a cynical manipulation of the gullible masses. I suppose that is it, it's almost too obvious to be obvious! But either Tr*mp and RFKJ et al are exceptional actors, or they're also part of the gullible masses themselves. Who's pulling the strings? Is it the lizards?

I think so. They need rallying points and dividing lines unique to their tribe. Religious extremism offers a perfect opportunity.

Some of his inner group may not necessarily believe this stuff, but it’s hard to know. As part of this weaponisation of autism, Trump’s been pushing a long discredited conspiracy that the Amish people don’t suffer with autism because they shun medical intervention, i.e. vaccines. Even RFKJ looked awkward when Trump asked him to confirm that particular conspiracy as truth. Another example of could have been Bannon seeming almost apologetic to throw a Nazi salute following Musk’s lead. So I think it’s largely an act. Although Kirk was deeply religious, so he was probably genuine in his views that patriots had to be devout Christians.

Trump is too stupid to work any of this out and too self-interested to care about the impacts. He’ll just latch on to whatever his latest crony has told him. I suspect people like Stephen Miller are having a big say in what’s happening.

The worry for us is that the US Christian right has been ramping up spending here in the UK to influence the debate on things like vaccinations, abortion, LGBT rights, assisted dying and faith schools. They’ve got a willing political ally now in Reform too, which will give these extreme ideologies some legitimacy.

Uppy for diagnosis. The Amish conspiracy is all about that. Of course you’ll get low rates in a sub-population that won’t present itself for diagnosis.

I think something similar to this graph is happening with autism:

I use this graph a lot.

And of course, if you don't test for these things they don't exist.

It was literally what he advocated during Covid when he thought they were testing too much and said if we test less the cases will drop.

He's a genius...

Anyone who for some bizarre reason believes that autism is caused my medications and vaccines that were created *after* the first cases of autism were recorded, should watch this video.

I am so utterly bereft today at this ridiculousness entering the public conversation on such a scale-
yesterday the BBC ran a soft headline reporting on it something along the lines of
“Trump links tylanol to autism, some experts remain skeptical”
There isn’t a credible medical expert alive who would link any vaccine or medication to “causing autism” - shame on the BBC for being so pathetically passive and weak on the subject.

Then there’s how Trump’s words frame autism- as a problem, something to be cured.
Make no mistake, this is eugenics.

Interestingly, Trump has linked increasing autism cases to the use of paracetamol, but the drug has been in common use in the US and the UK since the 1950s so that claim doesn't (in a causal sense) seem to stand up to scrutiny.

This suggests other factors such as better diagnosis.
[Post edited 23 Sep 8:39]

Trump also said yesterday that babies shouldn't have Hep-B vaccines as it is a sexually transmitted disease. It is transmitted in other ways, including through the mother.

More interestingly, he kept the sexually transmitted line going and said maybe we should wait until girls are 12. Without flinching.

Have you seen the film ‘Get Out’? Was screened late on Sunday night, BBC2. Meant to be horror fiction, but ends up feeling like a take on an increasingly nearer potential reality. Chilling.

Coincidentally watched it whilst reading forum thread “What does TWTD mean to you?”. Talk about perspective - I ended up concluding that to me, TWTD means sanity!

As far as you like. The whole thing about intellectuals is that they examine and question received wisdom. Which is dangerous for people who wish to push through self-serving agendas wrapped up in obscuring clouds of populist/mystical fluff.

Trump is clearly profoundly gullible, he simply believes everything he says.

What needs to be identified is who, apart from Putin, is pulling his strings.

I don't think Trump is gullible. He simply doesn't care, so long as he gets the things he wants out of any situation. Probably not even conscious cynicism, simply ultimate self-centeredness without any interest in the consequences for others.

A lot of it is that the threshold for diagnosis has changed significantly over the years but rather than analyse that it's easier to point fingers and push an agenda.

In amazing how many people say "nobody was autistic in my day" before retreating to the loft on their own to spend hours with a model train set or suchlike.

Obviously this is a facetious example but it's a way to highlight that awareness, understanding and diagnosis has improved greatly over the years and that is the context we should be looking at, not looking to scapegoat vaccines with no supporting evidence.

A few observations from me, the latter not one I have heard put forward (and is purely speculative on my part when it comes to autism).

1. "Autistic behaviour" would have been beaten out of children at home and in school "back in the day".

2. There was a time when people went straight into work, perhaps in a factory, after school, at 16, 15 or even earlier, so (even assuming autism was known as a condition) the chance of diagnosis would have been unlikely.

3. People these days are having children later which I believe brings with it more chance of something going wrong.

Forgot how good this video was. Particularly poignant when he reflects on the families who were conned Wakefield whilst they were vulnerable and looking for meaning

Oh Trump brought out some mothers of autistic children who blame vaccines? oh..
