No, you're supposed to stick to 20mph.

It's 20 in most of the area where I live and I now find 30 feels quite rapid (as it should as it's 50% quicker) when away from home.
It's honestly not hard to stick to a speed that gives pedestrians and cyclists a greater chance of survival in an accident!

I didn't say it was, although depending on the engine size and weight of the vehicle, it may be harder for some than others, particularly when going downhill.

It's a long time since I have been on a Speed Awareness course, so I was genuinely asking if the advice now being given now was to use 2nd Gear in a 20.

You are over the 10% + 2 buffer by 1 mph.

I mean unless you were going past a school or rows of parked cars that is pretty pathetic to be prosecuting people for 25mph.

And speedos overread so it probably looked more like he was doing 30mph on the speedo, in a 20mph.

If it encourages drivers to pay more attention that's a good thing.

But hey saw a guy doing about 40mph through Kesgrave, driving with one hand, other holding his phone to his ear, he almost drove into the kerb twice wearing over the road, missed the cars braking ahead of him.

I'm sure he thought he was safe and fine and it would be pretty pathetic to be prosecuted for driving like that till he hits someone, kills them, ruins one family's life for the rest of their lives.

Fair enough. I suspect it depends on the vehicle. My XC40 is quite happy at 20 in third. They'll all be auto in 10 years anyway so I guess we won't have to worry.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

The course is pretty informative tbh. You have to be a bit of a knob not to take it seriously. As others have pointed out, it's a cheaper alternative to the fine, points plus increased insurance premium. Also, I think careless driving carries 6 points?

It is very informative and left me with a few images/facts that waded to the front of my meagre brain and stayed there to act as future "reminders" to watch my speed. Seeing the difference in damage between 30 and 40mph hits is pretty sobering.

Nearer 27 i'd imagine.

I remember doing a speed aware course awhile back and they kept emphasising the large drop in casualties between 30 and 40 but yet here we are with 20. Will it be 10 next? (I'm not against 20 in specifically dangerous areas of course)

Yes phone driving is on a different level of danger to doing 25 in a 20. Cars just veer across carriageways so much more nowadays and it's clear why.

I've had three speed awareness courses. The coffee & biscuits were nice & you meet some nice folk!

I nearly missed my one the other day, I was late leaving home

Luckily the roads were clear( ish ), so I was able to give the old motor plenty of welly and got there just in time

I'm on DfT mailing list, get all sorts through that... Anyway from that deluge of data

25mph is the nationwide average speed for 20mph roads, 87% of road users speed in a 20 zone, consistent at all hours of the day every day of the week.

Doesn't answer your question, sorry

Indeed, I got caught by mobile camera vans, three times in four months back in the noughties.

Wife never failed to mention it at every opportunity until she was caught last year doing 25 in a 20….on our own street.

I did the speed awareness course a couple of years back and it was actually very good.

Not at all preachy, the two ladies running it had plenty of advice on how to control speed and the importance of looking ahead to spot potential hazards.

One of them even said, if you’re going to continue speeding, these tips should at least help you spot mobile camera vans in sufficient time to ram the brakes on next time..

Here’s one for the viewers, and have always been curious….

About 18 months driving home from work at the time (Marks Tey), I was taking the back roads as the A12 was knackered, and was coming along a stretch of road at Fordham which was national speed limit - but given the size of road, I was doing about 35-40mph down - to which came in to the residential part of Fordham which was a 30. I slowed down coming in to the 30, but sat right behind the sign - visible I may add - was a community speed watch group. Couple weeks later I had a letter in the post to simply warn me that my speed was clocked at 34mph and to be careful in future.

So I’ve always wondered, how are road users expected to drastically reduce their speeds from national speed limit roads going in to say 30-40mph areas, without the need for pretty much emergency stopping?

The Speed Awareness Course I went on emphasised "30 in a 30 in 3rd".

That is, if you stay in 3rd Gear whenever you are in a 30 limit zone, you have more control over your speed.

3rd doesn't give the same control in a 20. Now I live in Scotland where 20 is the default in most residential areas, am I supposed to stick to 2nd Gear?

Yes, according to the course I attended a couple of months ago. I remarked about the noise of the engine in 2nd gear at 20 and the reply was along the lines that you should expect to have to brake and go down from 3rd to 2nd in a 20 anyway, bearing in mind the number of potential hazards (traffic, pedestrians, hidden junctions etc).

I got a NIP just yesterday for doing 79 in a 70 on dual carriageway A47. Harsh I thought. But it was Norfolk, so...

Haven't had anything in years, so hoping for a course - never done one before.
