It's just Billiards on a massive scale, with a spot of beginners level orienteering thrown in.

I enjoy hacking around a golf course, have a house with a full size snooker table in it and used to enjoy orienteering and all that stuff. On a saddo 1-10 scale that probably puts me at a big fat 9. Oh well, I’ll try and live with it.

On a serious note, are golf and games like snooker a sport? Well, Mrs C reckons anything that includes equipment isn't a sport. But that leaves only running round in circles so that doesn’t work.

I see anything that involves competition and a clear result as a sport. Anything that involves competition and a subjective result like say gymnastics is more of a discipline.

This theory is full of holes as of course chess (wonderful game) involves competition and a definitive result but it’s not really a sport.

My conclusion after these musings is yes, golf is a sport.

Similar to darts and F1, really. I heard a commentator referring to 'these athletes' when [redacted] was on camera, and talking about how far they had to walk over three days - nearly twenty miles!

Well, it’s a long way when you’ve got to swing your clubs too!

Actually, most of them are pretty fit and work out these days, as do F1 drivers of course, but there’s no way you can call them ‘athletes’.

And you have to carry the clubs around too...oh wait. But there's still the walking, apart from when they use a golf buggy:

Definitely a sport IMO, a brilliant one at that. Can't say I'm too fussed what people want to call it though.

I love watching the top players, its remarkable how consistently good they are. The thing I really like about playing golf is that unlike a lot of sports you can keep doing it as you get older. Might lose some power and distance, but it's a great form of exercise, brilliant physically and mentally and sociable too.

I like going out to play golf and seeing 80 year olds out on the course, bl00dy good on them, even if they can be a bit miserable.

There's no doubt that Golf is a sport.

It combines gross motor and fine motor skills, requires strength to play at a professional level, and rewards those with good cardio-vascular fitness who can maintain a low heart rate under pressure.

Some of the shooting disciplines in the Olympics push the definition of sport tr hardest for me. They're just "Competitive being really still and letting the equipment do the work" and could possibly be replaced with Sleeping Lions.

My view is that a competitive activity for which you need to change your shoes is a sport. So golf is a sport, but darts & snooker are definitely not.
I would probably make an exception for able bodied golfers who choose to ride around the course in electric buggies, though.

I often wonder about that. If gymnastics and ice skating are in the Olympics, why not dancing? All those "sports" where there are cards held up with numbers judging them. Diving, synchronised diving, even ski jumping has a "style" element doesn't it?
All very skilful and dedicated, but a weird way to decide a result.

Indeed, while gymnastics is very skilful & athletic, I struggle with any sport which depends on judges giving marks for "artistic impression".

I think if you followed a professional golfer around for a month, youd agree thats its a sport full stop. Same with a top amateur player. Thes guys are not only incredibly talented, they are physically fit, hitting hundreds of practice balls is extremely demanding on the body, plus the walking & mental toughness & belief required. They compete on their own. Hats off to all of them.

I’d say it is true technically most difficult sport ever invented.

You have to hit a small ball maybe 400 yds into a small hole, taking into consideration temperature, air humidity, rain, sun, elevation, which way the grass is facing, the type of grass and many other factors I can’t think of…..

I generally struggle getting things in small holes without the complications.

If you watch some old lads having a kick about in the park, you'd hardly call football a sport. Watching four seniors off 26:handicap prodding along, you wouldnt call Golf a sport either. Answer is, at the top level it's a very competitive Sport, at the low level it's more a pastime. I'm not sure there is a more annoying & quite difficult game/sport than Golf.
