He’s a vastly superior all round keeper than Palmer. Unfortunately, he had a rotten start against Man City and it quickly snowballed from there. Goalkeeper is a particularly lonely position if it goes wrong early and the fans turn on you. [Post edited 3 Oct 23:04]

I agree. I’m pleased he’s doing well. He’s a better keeper than any we have at present including Palmer, but because the club paid money for him and had let Hladky go, he was bedsheet hate brigade target number one from the first game, if not before. Support? Here?? He stands no chance whatsoever (as evidenced by getting ‘the treatment’ in a pre season friendly). He is finished at this club. I think he should be given a free transfer so he can pursue his career elsewhere. He deserved some support, but got zero and will get less than that from our finest if he ever returns. Free transfer don't be ridiculous we are not a charity. Let's be honest good luck to him , but he was blo*dy awful here get the money and move on. As for Palmer we are at present a championship side a good keeper who is improving with his feet this season.

I said to a friend at the time that I was surprised that Muric was picked for the city game last season, Walton hadn't done anything wrong against Liverpool, and it seemed to me that it would have been better for him to make his debut at the next home game

Some of the goals that have gone in this season, I look at them and think Muric would have stopped that one But his distribution was ...interesting And it seemed like the defence had lost confidence in him, so I am guessing there is no way back from that Best he moves on when his loan spell is up

He had several Calamity James howlers that quickly cancelled out rare, hard-won goals from us in the Prem, thereby deflating team & fan morale, losing us crucial points, making our defence even nervier & more likely to make mistakes than they already had been, and ultimately losing the confidence of KM, hence getting Palmer in to replace him. The vast majority of our fans *are* decent, but we're not saints, there's a limit to what we'll put up with, ep in our first, hard-won season back in the top league in 22 years.

I attended all the games Muric played last season and don't recall the fans turning on him during games. At the end of the day, I think he lost confidence in himself, and it is obvious that McKenna did so too. But I am pleased he is doing well in Italy, and as he is still signed to us, I don't suppose it is beyond the bounds of possibility that he could feature for us in the future. Early Clangers ? Yes, it was never the same after the Soup Dragon was frozen out... Muric did get a card a quarter of an hour from the end of the game last night, were Sassuolo playing for time to get the away win ? But despite all that they are in the top half of Serie A, he kept a clean sheet and we are mid table in the second tier. Maybe it is being a bit closer to home for him, finding it easier to integrate into the local community not because of cultural or linguistic similarity but perhaps outlook ?

He is the 'best' keeper we have - never seen a keeper of ours claim crosses so well but as others have said he is erratic and doesn't seem to have the confidence in himself or his defenders. 'Free transfer'?! is that a swipe at the boo boys who wanted him out - Sassuolo have an option to buy for just under £9m at the end of the season.

Fair point at the end of your last paragraph, esp since it could be said that his greatest fault was his failure to communicate with his team-mates in his box.

“I tried to get behind him…” You should’ve waited until the 90th minute, there would have been plenty of space when he came charging off his line and into no man’s land for no reason. Seriously, yes, he’s a good keeper, but he wasn’t for us. He made way too many mistakes, and lost the confidence of the manager, his defenders and the fans. Are you going to criticize McKenna for dropping him and buying another keeper? He wasn’t working and for the money we paid, we seriously should’ve expected better than we got. Yes some fans were numpties with how they reacted long term but you can’t blame them for his poor performances.

Yes, I wondered if it was partly a cultural/outlook thing when it came to Ipswich, given that Hladky also seemed rather detached from the rather British nature of the team at the time. And it can't have been easy when things were going wrong in place far from home. As you suggest, Muric with Swiss, Albanian, Montenegrin and Kosovan heritage, may just feel more comfortable in a place like Italy. [Post edited 4 Oct 12:31]

Sadly as recent posts have shown on here some of our fanbase have no patience and need to have somebody to focus their wrath on. Muric got it then it was Billy Jean then Jack Clarke etc ... The ongoing cycle... Muric was without doubt out best goalie last year talent wise, but he had a rough patch and needed a break at the time he was dropped. I had hoped he would have found he way back into the side but he didn't and now he's enjoying Italy.

Yes, it was a bit of a silly cheap shot - apologies. I hadn’t picked up on the option to buy tbh. I hope he does well for himself and should he do so, that’ll only benefit us.

The bitter irony is he would have been perfect for us in this league to have gained back the confidence. We will concede far fewer chances against us than last season, he would have faced far fewer shots, had more time on the ball as the press is not as good for fear of us breaking, and we will be dealing with far more high balls which was his bread and butter. Corners were not as good against us when he was in goal as he was such a presence that no one man handled him on the line and no one crossed within 10 feet of where he was standing . It’s strange as palmer is only a couple of inches shorter but seems no where near as big as what muric did.

That didn't go too well for Southampton. We'll have to go up with a different approach to be honest, we can't just buy the best of the Championship and continue trying to play out. We're going to need to be far more defensively minded.

I think there still would have remained his unwillingness or inability to communicate with team-mates in and around his box, something KM & other staff seem unable to have coached him into any improvement on, and with that being so fundamental, I doubt he'd have been "perfect for us in this league" tbh.

Muric tonight on 19:30 - Oct 4 with 780 views | tetchris | Hope he does really well for them and then we can get a decent fee for him as initially it looked like we would be lucky to get a £1 million for him based on last seasons performances which would be a massive loss/disaster. His errors last season cost 5 goals at least and from what reports have said in the press is that he has cut out mistakes leading to goals. Not sure there is anyway back even if he won Italian player of the season lol
