Loans with obligations 14:26 - Oct 8 with 1887 views | Len_Brennan | If we do manage to get straight back up to the PL, the loan deals for Kipre, Azon & Akpom all crystallise into permanent deals, with a requirement to pay approx. £4m, £9m & £7m respectively in additional fees. Having seen all 3 getting minutes for us now, how do you feel about us being tied to those obligations for next season, should this year go as we hope? I think we're in a good place, as all 3 look to have the quality to play PL football, with Kipre & Azon looking like they are fully committed types with a good team ethic. Akpom has still a bit to do as he has been out of the game at times for me, but he has shown flashes of what he can do & his ability to finish is not in question. As the games come thick & fast now, he'll get his chance & I think we'll see his quality & some goals too.

Do we even have an option with Azon? I've seen differing reports on this.

No obligation - this appears to have been what scuppered the original deal, due to an injury concern. I don't think there's even an option, which is a shame.
Loans with obligations on 14:54 - Oct 8 with 1676 views | tetchris | Wasn’t the Azon deal a straight loan? From what I’ve seen so far, he would make a good permanent signing.
Loans with obligations on 15:00 - Oct 8 with 1633 views | Dennyx4 | Think that Cajuste has an obligation, but Azon as stated previously on this thread doesn’t.
Loans with obligations on 15:32 - Oct 8 with 1515 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | It's Kipre, Akpom and Cajuste isn't it? Peanuts if we get promoted, basically a McAteer fee but after receiving all the promotion cash, maybe two of those would be loaned out for a fee or something. Turnover in squad would still be really big if we got back. I think we'd have 6/7 new starters, minimum. [Post edited 8 Oct 15:36]

I'd like to see us try keep the core of the team together if we can for our next go at the premier league. We did wholesale changes last season and it didnt work. Maybe one or two additions in key positions but going mad in the transfer market didn't work and the team didnt gel in time to hit the ground running. For a promoted team, it's vital to start strongly.

Loans with obligations on 16:05 - Oct 8 with 1310 views | bluearmy4838 | c. £20m for the 3 of Cajuste, Kipre & Akpom combined is peanuts really, for a premier league club. Especially from a PSR perspective when amortised over 4 years or whatever. Expect there will be a few departures - Ogbene & Muric to the highest bidders, maybe Ben Johnson as well. End of the road for Burns & Chappers possibly. Button, Townsend, Young & Taylor all out of contract. Not getting ahead of ones self but aside from 2 or 3 that might take a little more work to move on I think the squad / contract status is in a very good spot. IF we can go back up the bigger assets are largely well protected, with plenty of headroom to add more quality. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

We'll be in a much stronger position in terms of improving the squad. Compared to last time around. When we came up with half our L1 squad.. Hopefully we can add quality rather than quantity next time. Like 5-8 players, and not 10-12 Feels like we have a better platform to work from.

Even if the squad begins to gel as before though, I doubt whether Joey Joe's estimate of 6-7 new players would prove enough unless at least four of them were players that would automatically get into, say, a team finishing in the top half. Even given that if we were to get there, we'd be arriving with more momentum from this current crop, having seen what we saw last time, I don't feel that there are more than half a dozen players that we currently have who would survive to play a significant part in the Prem. Check Sunderland's team at the end of last season and the start of the season. It's not about changes, it's about getting players in that are good enough both in terms of talent and physicality. We have a 3 or 4 tops that might make the step up as starters IMO, we won't be keeping this core group together though be many could still be in the squad. Getting ahead of ourselves obviously.

I think a key difference is that what we'd have as finishers from the current squad's starters would be a level above what we had last time round.

Yes, a good platform but we would need a tone of new arrivals in still. Probably 5-6 that I think that we would just not entertain as being part of a PL squad and 4 or so that might be make decent starters if they have the right players alongside them and plenty that could make up part of the squad. Agree - 5-6 fringe players move out, and we get in PL ready replacements. One being a new number 1 'keeper. As for Sunderland, I reserve judgement to the latter part of the season. They had a great start, but also had a favourable fixture draw. I expect them to drop away by the New Year, and struggle by the end of the season. We'll see...

Yes I think we would absolutely look to bring in a high quality keeper, and a high quality no.9 if we were to get promoted. One has to be a little bit ruthless, and those really are key positions, and are not currently our very strongest departments (no real negativity intended, but the '3 best players' thread makes clear that nobody thinks that no. 1 and no. 9 are are strongest suits at the moment, and a step up in quality is required in the Prem).
Loans with obligations on 17:56 - Oct 8 with 856 views | Swansea_Blue | I was expecting more from Akpom tbh. That’s probably my fault though, based off his last ‘Boro season. And it seems he didn’t have a full season AND he’s getting used to new team mates and probably a new system/way of working. At the moment I can’t see how we’d want him in the PL, but there’s obviously time for him to get more used to us and find his mojo. Azon, not a requirement as others have said. As of now, no I wouldn’t want him in the PL either. But again he’s going through a big adjustment and has time to develop. Kipre is probably the most PL ready, but you’d think he’d be a squad player in most PL teams.

You would hope we go up a bit more PL ready this time around Clearly more pace and athleticism will be needed. I do wonder if our slower tempo is with one eye on having a more controlled style for the PL also
