Like I said, he’ll be back next week for another £500.

Perhaps someone like Herbi will put him up for a bit.

For context of course, this would have been his legal representation 'kicking up a fuss', not him saying "Give us £500 or I'll be a bit rowdy"

The cost of that flight to be rescheduled for him and the 5 people who were escorting him would have been £10k plus, so £500 to shut everyone up appears reasonable if not particularly palatable.

A similar argument on cost was made on asylum hotels vs using barracks etc. The latter might cost more, which you'd think would annoy Reform etc, but politically it's more acceptable. The public see barracks as a form of prison vs staying at the Holiday Inn

£500 to shut everyone up just seems like something from a film or how it works in developing countries. It's just morally wrong, and its just more gifts for Reform, I can already predict the "it would have offended his human rights" mocking in the Daily Mail.

The article sets out the higher costs of him not getting on the plane, but why do we not have the power to force him onto the plane, not brutally, but in the same way we forcibly arrest somebody with handcuffs.

It's very much how it works here and in many other major economies around the world and will be set out in their SOP.

To be clear, he wasn't freely popped onto a plane to enjoy the in-flight entertainment. He was sent on with 5 security guards to ensure there was no trouble.

We do have the power, but there are also legal processes to be followed. The £500 will have just smoothed some of those over. Lawyer has ticked the make an effort box and everyone is on their way.

The answer to Reform is of course not go down this route, keep him here for longer while he appeals at a much higher cost/risk of disappearing.

It's not palatable, but it's the reality of the systems we and most other countries operate. Unless you want to see Trump style I.C.E. tactics, which is something Farage has said he wants here.

On the face of it, you can get angry but if it meant it happened that night then so be it. How much would it cost to keep him here for even another few days and re-hire security and a plane etc. a lot more than £500.

You can lay out some of the details about legal representation etc, and I've no reason to doubt you, but there's nothing there to convince me making a £500 payment is not morally wrong.

I can only think that perhaps the home office made some mistakes with the paperwork, and they then legally couldn't deport him.

But for me, if all was done correctly, there's no way this should have occurred, whether that's "how it works" or not.

And i don't think it's either this way or Trump's way either.

I'll take the free phone though.

Cheers.

....and read my post, then decided that I am either Ethiopian or a sex offender (maybe both) and then logged back in to downvote it to show his disagreement.

That or he's been lying and just downvoted it for no real reason.

All a bit weird.

Having read the story and understanding the full circumstances of the payment, whilst it's understandable most will be outraged at the payment, when taken in the context of booking another flight, housing him in the UK for longer and the potential legal expenses, it might seem £500 could be considered value for money.
Yes, I, like all of us, wouldn't say no to a £500 cash injection right now, but take away the "waste of tax payers money" hyperbole and consider that amount instead against the millions of pounds wrapped up in migration control and it barely registers.
In fact, I'm sure those most outraged by this payment would be the first to put their hand up to raise money to see more "illegals" deported.
Personally I'm more interested in the fact that we now have one less sex offender in the country,

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.
