It's going to be a season of tedious 'fans' 23:06 - Nov 4 with 8823 viewsjasondozzell

Moaning at every opportunity, delighting in having a pop at players and KM and then joining in the promotion celebrations at the end and saying 'never in doubt I love this team'.

“The fact is that….”

Really, that is a fact is it. What about the idea that some of these players may simply be not up to it, and are not worth what we have paid ? Is that something we have to entertain at some point, rather than putting constant faith in this system and ‘patterns of play’ that we are hoping to come to fruition at some point ( By the way have seen very little of these patterns of play taking shape in most games)

The problem with your argument is that at some point you have to accept that it is not working and these players haven’t in fact gelled/ grasped the patterns of play and at what point does this come ?

1. Well yeah, it is a fact that McKenna's style and patterns of play take a while for the players to understand and play without thinking. I stand by that.

2. Obviously not all players work out. But the current squad has been together for 9 games, so in answer to 'at what point do these players gel' I'd say "not yet".

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I don't really care what Sunderland are doing. Good luck to them if they've hit the ground running. I could quote you loads of great teams that didn't gel immediately.

The fact is McKenna's style and patterns of play take a while for the players to understand and play without thinking. If you're not patient enough to wait and give it a chance because some other team gelled quicker then there's not much I can say. But in a team sport players often need time to gel.

"I don't care..." It is precisely because of fans with viewpoints like this that we managed to regress under Evans for 14 years.

Why wouldn't you care when a club, possibly 2, or possibly even 3 this season, are showing us what can be done? Shouldn't KM and MA man up and admit the transfer policy last season was wrong, and look to adopt a best practice approach instead?

In the pursuit of continuous improvement and excellence there is always a need to learn from the best, not find excuses "...loads of great teams that didn't gel immediately blablabla..". Why compare ourselves with teams that have failed?

Rubbish, that did not happen, we were all behind Robson that season, and we knew it was injuries that cost us a decent league position.

Vic is correct. There were a lot of moans and muttering that season including views such as maybe his race here was run. I was there. I heard it. It ebbed away once we got through the early couple of FAC rounds (Cardiff and Hartlepool?) and somehow there was a feeling in the air.

We were terrible at West Ham and lost 3-0 (David Cross) and a few days later at QPR where we got a draw - I was at both games. Robson at QPR was very tetchy and told my dad to p£ss off - he deserved it too 😀.

Relegation fears finally went away when we scrambled a 1-0 win v Bristol City. We were pretty inconsistent at best and some were not happy about it.

Not as bad as the early 70s though when Robson was getting absolute pelters.

You have totally misrepresented what I've said, and taken 3 words out of context.

Of course I care about this club and want it to improve, but crying and bitching because one other team is doing marginally better doesn't prove or achieve anything.

What are you suggesting, that we sack the manager when things aren't going perfectly after a few games? Do you yearn to be Watford? What is this "best practice approach" we should be following?! Which teams have I compared us to who have failed?!

You're all over the place.
Another who thinks real football is like a computer game.
Switch it off and switch it on again and everything will be fine.

That’s probably your best point on this thread imo. People going in too hard maybe haven’t really thought about what they want. Do they really want KM and his team all sacked and a new start? Is that what’s missing? It’s easy to moan, harder to find answers (be we are underperforming to avoid any doubt).

Poll: Escaped Goat of the day. Who’s it going to be?

Well, I'm afraid we will have to agree to disagree! I went to every home match and a lot of away ones too. I stood in the North Stand and, unless my memory is playing tricks on me, I heard and saw no anti-Robson actions. I do agree, however, that Robson was barracked in the early 70s, but that was after a couple of poor seasons and a string of defeats.

"crying and bitching because one other team is doing marginally better doesn't prove or achieve anything" - it proves that the gap for a newly promoted club to the PL is not insurmountable as many believe.

"What are you suggesting, that we sack the manager when things aren't going perfectly after a few games" - where did I say I wanted KM sacked? He probably has to change his approach though and instil a sense of urgency into this new team. For example. Since L1 days we fail to break down teams who sit in a low block. The predictable like-for-like changes. And cut out the sideways and backwards passing. None of them are working out, both in the PL and now.

"Do you yearn to be Watford?" - again, where did I even mention Watford? Since you mention Watford, pound for pound they are doing better than us. By far.

"What is this "best practice approach" we should be following" - look at how teams like Sunderland and Leeds have been recruiting this season at the bare minimum. Or whatever analytics they have been using for one. If I had the solution for this I'd be sitting in MA's position now. I'm not paid millions to suss out the approach, MA and his team are.

"Which teams have I compared us to who have failed?!" - you didn't give names, but didn't you say you could quote loads of great teams that didn't gel immediately?

There was a lot of taking what you’d said and twisting it into something extreme done in the post you’ve replied to. Think the only point you really made was that transfer policy was wrong not let’s rip the club up and start again

We were either at the side or in Churchmans. It was as much an undercurrent and a minority of individuals as anything else and I believe some of it may have stemmed from long memories when Robson almost went to Everton in 1977. Suffolk people don’t forget!

But let’s face it, it was a depressingly long time ago now and memories (mine) are not infallible

We weren't just a newly promoted club though. We were a double-promoted club. So staying in the Prem would obviously be very difficult within that context.

I didn't say you wanted KM sacked. Have I touched a raw nerve? I merely asked what it is you want. I didn't mention Watford in terms of how they're doing but how they love to change managers on a regular basis.

LOL, and the classic, when pushed on what your answer is "I'm not paid millions to suss out the approach."

So you don't have an answer, you're just, as I said, crying and bitching.

You've lost the plot with your last point - you've literally quoted me saying "great teams" and somehow turned that into "teams who have failed."

If we'd won last night, which we easily could and should have, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I was in my teens and tbh I don’t think I truly realised at the time what a privilege it was to see those teams. I was so lucky. I saw a lot of the 75 cup run. How with school on a Saturday I managed that I’ll never know.

That terrific team should have won the league in 77. It ran out of gas - a recurring problem when trying to fend off Liverpool.

I got to do most of the 78 cup run (missed Bristol R and Cardiff away - I was hoofing and kicking lumps out of victims in the frost on those days which was odd as I mostly played Sundays) and saw a lot of Robsons greatest team. I saw us smash Man U 6-0 and it felt good but sort of as it should be. Such arrogance on my part.

I got to see Kevin Beattie in his prime. Paul Mariner too. I guess you never truly appreciate something until it is gone. You are right. We were blessed to witness the best team in Europe.

You describe exactly my feeling of the time , I was also a teenager but one thing I do recall was come the turn of the year The FA Cup became another huge opportunity for every team not chasing the title!..... In 1978 that applied to us in particular and just may have been the underlying push to Cup glory.Third round day was always a huge landmark day in the season. It's such a shame what has become of the FA Cup......... You are spot on about not realising what you have until its gone!

And this team has been together for 9 games of it. That's the context you're not understanding.

If you think it's as simple as buying the most expensive players, putting them all together and then you instantly have a great team, you only understand computer game football, not real football.

But flash just asking so dont come at me lol

But isn't that where the Sunderland thing does make you question things. They've achieved it in a much much harder league.

Surely its harder to get on the front foot in the prem than in the champ?

Anyway i stood on the hill that we get going from november and if we in sat im happy that its on par with what I thought.

As I said earlier, well done Sunderland, good for them. They show it's possible, but it's far from the norm.

History is littered with great teams that took a while to build. Very few happened overnight.

Sunderland are achieving what we did 25 years ago. Astonishing and well done them. But it’s the exception not the rule and you don’t measure against exceptions unless you want to be disappointed.

The general rule is it takes time to truly build a side. Take Leeds. Despite all their established PL experience and money, it took two seasons for them to build a team that got them promoted. Do we measure against them? Or Leicester, who even fiddled the rules for advantage, Saints, Burnley, Fulham, Brentford etc etc?

I think you try and lean lessons from each example but don’t forget our circumstances are very different. Even to Sunderland despite them only a few seasons ago being in the L1 pit. They have a PL ground, infrastructure, a coach who knew the foreign market for beginners. They also spent a year under achieving in the Championship before scraping the play offs again and succeeding.

Nobody wants to talk about that because we have better players. And we do, but that doesn’t mean that after 10 games they should play like Brazil 1970. In other words making comparisons or using another club as a single benchmark over the dozens of others who’ve been down the same road and struggled is futile - unless it’s an exercise in beating up.

Robsons great teams didn’t just appear. They developed and that’s usually how it works. It did with McKenna’s promotion teams. What’s changed? Flash is right. Realistically 9 games since 1/9. It’s too soon to judge in my view.

What Sunderland have done is amazing, but is surely an outlier. Again for context, Burnley and Leeds are where Leicester were after 10 games last season. I still think it’s odds on that the promoted sides will be the ones most likely relegated. Sunderland may well have built enough of a buffer to survive, but will finish much lower than they are now.

Wolves’ implosion also helps at least one promoted side achieve safety.

Everyone’s team has been together the same amount of time, we’re not unique in making transfers during the Summer

8 of our top 10 appearance makers were here last season

I’m ever hopeful we will still click into gear and the division not having a stand out side bar possibly Coventry will help, but given that every Ipswich side that’s been promoted in my lifetime has been in the top 5 by this point of the season it’ll be something of an anomaly if we do wind up winning promotion
