There is a Premier League stories show about Luc now on Sky (and presumably elsewhere) talking about his career and the injury he got at Portman Road back in 2000. Purely accidental but an incredibly gruesome injury to have endured.

Hadn't realised what a good player he was and how short-lived his Aston Villa career ended up being. I would recommend watching.

Horrendous injury. There is a picture somewhere that I have no desire to see and it's sickening.
One of those up there with David Busst. Which I think is the worst injury I've seen.

Luckily I was the other side in the West Stand and didn’t see much of it. But it was obvious it was catastrophic. I’ve seen the footage and have no desire to see it again. Yes, it’s the worst football injury I’ve seen, including Whelan’s foot the wrong way round.

I think I know the photo you’re referring to. Sure the News of the World ran with it.

I was in upper Cobbold. You knew it was a bad one as soon as he went down after colliding with Plug. When I saw the photo afterwards of the moment his leg broke made me wince

He's one of those that's rated as the best by players he played with i.e. Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy etc..

Scored this absolutely belter for Villa in one of his few games for them:

I was in the then family stand with the kids in the lower Cobbold, horrible, when Wrighty stopped playing and franticly shouting and waving the physio's on while Villa had possession, we all knew it was very serious. A Town player, I think it may have been Reuser, took one look and threw up on the pitch.

ooh, maybe cracking wasn't the right word in this context. I remember it also. Good that he got over his post-career personal problems. Very honest guy.

I was virtually in front of it, you heard the crack sound of shin pad on shin pad and then just sort of saw his leg fold round Wrightys, such a horribly innocuous clash.
The only other one I remember hearing as vividly as that was the pop when Alan Judge broke his leg* at PR for Brentford.

*well I guess Luke Hyam technically

That was not a good challenge, the Brentford players wanted to lynch Hyam. Judge was never the same player.

I'm still not convinced it was even a foul.

It was right in front of me and a truly dreadful challenge. When he wasn’t sent off, MM should have subbed Hyam immediately. I and plenty of others couldn’t believe it when he was left on. It was obvious somebody would do him or he’d get a red card later and so it proved. Bonkers, Mick.

Yes, I had forgotten about that. As you say, bonkers Mick.

That was grim. The other one I remember was Phil Whelan - his leg pointing one way, his foot the other.

Felt physically sick seeing that.

I was in the North. The sound of the crack was insane, a freak injury.

It wasn’t good. He was stretchered past us and to say he wasn’t a happy bunny was the understatement of the year.

Another grisly was a West Ham player during the 2000/01 season in front of North Stand towards the West Stand corner. I think somebody’s stud caught the back of his calf and opened it up like a joint of beef. ‘Gonna need a plaster, that’ said the bloke in front. No sht Sherlock!

It was a swallow your dinner back job too.

I remember Judge lying on the ground afterwards, reaching out in distress and trying to drag himself towards the referee.

On Nilis, I didn't realise Matt Byard was a ginger:
