I didn't vote Labour and am not a fan of McSweeny and his Blue Labour crowd. I think the party lacks political deftness - competence, even. However, Starmer is largely damned wither way.
The right-leaning press hate him because he's not one of their Reform darlings and too friendly with Europe. Commentators to the left hate him because he's not a radical, betrayed Corbyn/purged Momentum, isn't satisfyingly rude to Trump.
That leaves a group in the middle who are merely annoyed with him because he hasn't made the Cost of Living Crisis go away and threatens to raise taxes (then doesn't).
On top of which is a big dollop of impatience. And a narrative of failure gaining wide acceptance by mere repetition (largely from people who have already themselves failed or who have never attianed positions of real responsibility).
Certainly, Labour could have handled things better. But neither have they yet been a disaster. Their chief sin is being too "meh" for anybody - and not having a charismatic leader who can bluster on demand. | |

I voted for Labour and they have been a massive disappointment- I thought that Starmer would be a lot more radical than what he has been and a lot more aggressive in his dealings with Reform. But he’s been too safe and trying to appease everyone especially Reform voters.
Saying that I don’t regret voting for them, I just think that Stramer is the right man but at the wrong time. He needs to go and replaced with someone with more energy and more able to connect - not sure who that person is though. |  | | |

I would like to point out that Labour did not get in because more people voted for them, they got in because of the people who voted for Reform instead of Conservative.
Labour % of votes in 2024 = 33.7% (seats 411)
Conservative % of votes in 2024 = 23.74% (seats 121)
Labour % of votes in 2019 = 32.2% (seats 202)

It's not just energy and connection- they are the cherry on the cake.
It's moral leadership and values driven politics which is lacking. Both in terms of your first paragraph- absolutely taking on the hate agenda propagated by Farage and the Golf Club Committee members and teenage 4chan stans now running Social Services in a town near you.
But also in setting out a vision for the nation and the roadmap to restoring so much of what was cut during the optional choice of responding to a global recession with austerity. That will take time, more than a decade, but there's no sense of a plan, and no communication about why it matters. Nothing on the scandalous lack of investment in local roads (which often comes near the top of most people's complaints) or the decimation of youth services which enabled the county lines network and the grooming gangs, and nothing positive about migration and the benefits it bestows on eg the NHS.
Just Rachel fecking Reeves finding ways to keep the disaster capitalists at bay for another month.
Depressing doesn't do it justice.
And, of course, the billionaires get richer, and want us to be depressed so that their useful idiot Farage can implement the destruction of the NHS and more repressive targeted measures to divide and conquer and keep the little people from challenging their place in the game.
I think we should all go all-in on supporting nice guy Ed Davey, so that he can become Prime Minister before Hugh Bonneville becomes too old to play him in the inevitable "against all odds" biopic.
