A quiet pint by yourself with a copy of the paper or a decent book is one of life's underrated pleasures. Although, as the bar in the article in question is a karaoke bar, quite why you'd want to go to one of them with a book, I don't know. [Post edited 19 Nov 17:13]

Remember a colleague of mine was in the local near work one night, having a beer and reading his book. One of the interns was in there with his mates, and decided to go over for a chat, so older colleague, very polite as he is humoured him, small talk etc.... Then the intern went away, only to pop back over a little while later for another chat. At which point my colleague politely put his book down and calmly said to the intern: 'X, let me give some advice. If you see a man in a bar, on his own, reading a book, it's because he wants to be in a bar, on his own, reading a book.' Amen.

Sometimes it's nice to have something a little different, in the ambience of a good pub. I ring church bells as a hobby, and there's a really nice pub here in Norwich, next door to the tower, which generally has a roaring fire and a good selection of guest ales. I normally pop in to have a quiet pint before ringing practice, sometimes with a good book. It's just nice to escape the general noise of daily life, and switch off every now and then.

I used to love popping out for a pint on a Sunday afternoon on my own. Just me, Guinness, a good book, and 20 Marlboro for a couple of hours. TWTD. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

A quiet pint by yourself with a copy of the paper or a decent book is indeed a pleasure to savour. However, it's a "cocktail and karaoke bar". What if you really fancy a pina colada and there's nowhere else nearby that serves them? Just because you're on your own you'd have nowhere to go. I actually think that the owner can more or less have whatever door policy he likes but don't dress it up as some kind of way of 'protecting customers'.

The truth behind it seems to lie in his later comments, along the lines of it being a real faff if something happens to a punter (like a fit or any other medical incident) and they're there on their own. Heaven forbid that they actually have to take care of their guests in an emergency.

Good job we're not all the same then! Although I'm with you on the "top dollar" thing. Also, you cannot get decent ale from a can!

It's the people who have to ask the bar-staff about every single cocktail on the menu and then the waiting for a Tom Cruise wannabe to finish making the damn things so he can catch up on the queue that's backed up by pulling normal pints again.

As someone who works from home most of the time, sometimes I just like being out of the house. I have done this when I was some time alone to read for an hour.

I work from home so a quiet beer after work to get me out of the house is quite a good thing and my local is quite nice. [Post edited 20 Nov 12:37]

I'm quite glad to see the preponderance of people on this thread who are find sitting in a pub with a book and a pint as enjoyable as I do. Definitely one of life's pleasures. Even if meeting a friend, sometimes it's still nice to get there early for a bit of reflection.
