Thursday is no longer the new Friday...! 08:31 - Nov 21 with 1581 viewsitfcjoe

Used to be a real busy night in town, but was in last night

Had a few beers in Arcade Tavern, then went to Mizu at 8:45, they were getting ready to shut, floor was mopped and we were only people there - they said they shut at 9:30 so we did eat but by time we left heating was off, music had stopped.

Went to the Botanist, they had stopped serving at 9:30, so walked up to Three Wise Monkeys, that was shut, so back to Arcade for a quick one then home.

I can see why with staff costs it's not worth staying open, but just mad how dead it was on what used to be a lively night

Had a similar experience in Chelmsford recently. I don’t see how much longer some of these places can hang on, it seems like a few pubs are heaving and the majority are dead, most dead of all are the fancier bars.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Just too expensive. I think. Wetherspoons is always at least semi-full on any day of the week, so there must be some interest.

Also, places like the Botanist are just not good enough when they charge so much money. At least the Arcade Tavern is a really nice bar/pub.

I suppose it's possible that a cold week in late November is an incentive for people to stay in and save themselves and money for going out in December. But, yeah, a 9:30 close is not the sign of a healthy economy.

Yup this, when places are charging £6+ for a Madri then no wonder people would rather stay in.

Would also note that every town/high street seems to have a saturation of restaurants and bars these days vs maybe 10 years ago. With so many options it’s no wonder half are empty, a sign of how we’ve grown and become reliant on the service sector. This is one of the reasons the UK faired so badly during COVID/lockdown compared to peers. GDP per capita has been decreasing despite record population growth because we aren’t creating enough high skilled jobs. The economy contracted ~20pc at the peak of COVID, comparable to Russia and Israel during war. We have a seriously imbalanced economy.

I think these bars shutting early are shooting themselves in the foot (feet?). It's a self fulfilling prophecy.
If you think the bar might be shut you won't go.
These places need to start stating that "we will be definitely be open until 11.00pm"

A lot of why Thursday used to be busy (thinking back to the 90s here) was that it was all the students and young adults out that night, but that demographic dont seem to be so booze up focused as we were at that age.

Thursday was always student night at the various clubs, with cheap beer offers and all that jazz, just about able to cope with work on Friday whilst hanging badly.

But not actually clearing much profit on that, think the only places that can do enough on these nights are ones where you have a live in/salaried manager or are the landlord/tenant.

How many pints of £6 Madri do you need to sell to justify paying someone £12.50 an hour plus all other employment costs to stay open from 9 til 11 plus the time to close up etc?

Just remembered I was in a few weeks back on a Thursday, and ate at the excellent Bushido opposite the Regent - but we went to the Salutation beforehand....was £3 for a Fosters and £4 for a Cruzcampo and we were the only people in there before we ate and went back for one after and were still the only people in there

Yeah totally get that they have to charge that price to make it work for them.

No one is winning from this.

I definitely think it has something to do with a change in young people's attitude towards drink.
When I was a student, Thursday nights were always lively and Friday lectures a struggle.

I have been in The Dove a couple of times in the last few months and you could count the number of people in there on your fingers. Bar lady said The Regent being temporarily shut has been hard for them. They are independent too and have no large brewery or corporation behind them.

For years, whenever I have walked past The Salutation, it has been virtually empty. You wonder how it can keep going. I thought that about Mannings recently too - you read it has spent a six figure sum to renovate it ( and it barely looks any different). I have been in a couple of times on a Friday and it has been dead even with a DJ on. The pay back period for that investment must be a seriously long time.

A relative of mine worked in a pub for a bit and said there are so many people that go in for 'a catch up' with someone during the week and can make a pint of beer/Coke last about 3 hours. And with no issue still sitting there at 10pm without buying anything. Spend of no more than about £12 between them all night. You are losing money on these 'customers' but you can't kick them out or say anything.

Kids today are just lightweights innit.
As anyone else noticed that there also minimal craic?

I thought Monday night at Hollywoods / Kartouche was the student night in Ipswich? It certainly was for me. That and Wednesdays at Sound Academy.

Monday was student night and played rock, indie, electronic and S Club 7.

Thursdays at Hollywoods took itself far too seriously but was still a fun night out.

Think you've hit on something there. Very noticeable where I drink that you'll see groups of 7 or 8 young 'uns nursing a can of coke all night where us established drinkers are putting a good ton behind the bar.

Was definitely a much greater rites of passage drinking culture when I turned 18.

Tax rises will of course be passed on to consumers, it’s no coincidence the highest taxing countries (e.g Scandinavia) typically have the highest cost of living. The problem is successive governments including this one, are afraid of taxing the wealthy equitably (eg CGT, Inheritance, mansion/asset taxation).

The lower and average paid workers in this country pay more tax than those in Sweden and Denmark (OECD) there’s nothing progressive about that, tax wealth not work. They are killing entrepreneurship and SME’s which make up the majority of our economy, and then wondering why we have no growth.

Conversely, I went for a beer after work in the City on Wednesday (leadenhall market area) and I could not believe how busy it was. Was as if it was the last working day before Christmas, but it was actually a random Wednesday in November. Could barely get into any pub. Silly season starts earlier every year!

I'm telling yer, kids today are just a bit boring and dry. It's like none of um wanna stand out or be seen as rocking the boat in anyway.

We hired about 20 fresh graduates for a large infrastructure project we had a couple of years ago. All lovely people but absolute minimal craic. They were even sensible when drinking etc. I didn't wanna upset their feelings but I found most of um a tad disappointing

Only 1 of um still works with me..
