Mine was a powder blue Triumph Herald, Paid £90 for it

Lovely motor, easy to work on but prone to rust

A red Mini 850 called Rosie when I was a student.. Loved that car. A rust bucket though. Managed to get it through an MOT by using newspaper, mesh and 'plastic padding' on the wheel arches and sills. In the end I think it had more plastic padding than metal. Not sure that'd suffice these days.

Ready! Steady! Cook!

My herald ended up with more of this stuff than metal

Mine was a Vauxhall Viva, 1976 model, with a sexy sky blue plastic interior. Paid £200, I think. The rear wheel drive was great fun in the snow on the small roads between Long Melford and Lavenham.

Vauxhall Astra 1.6GL. Blue. Nice first car.

Stayed over at a house party and it rained hard all night. Drove home and took it for a swim as the area had flooded. I still remember it well. Driving over a small hill around beddingfield and it was just water everywhere but it all looked normal but flat in poor light. Water went over the roof. Told myself "don't stall, don't stall". Stalled. Managed to limp home but that was the beginning of the end.

On another occasion I was driving home a bit too fast around the Aspall bends and hit one raised verge then bounced back and hit the other. Cracked bumper but all reasonably unscathed. Learned a lesson there.

1979 Vauxhall Chevette (in ITFC blue!). Drove it like it was a F1 car which led to it having 3 engines during my ownership of it!!

A green 1977 mk2 Ford Escort 1100.
A MW radio with big push buttons. No tape player.
I had it for a couple of years.
Gutless as f@ck but it was my wheels and I loved it.
The engine dropped out in the end and it would have cost more to repair than it was worth.
I still remember driving it (just about) to the scrap yard in Snailwell and watched on sadly as the machine grabbed it and threw it on a pile.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Mine was a 1959 Austin 7 Mini. Wish I had kept hold of it! Instead I sold it for £100 to someone who used it as a stock car...

Yellow Skoda 105, with the engine in the back. Got it from a friend for nothing. Went round corners well, but frequently conked out going up hills (even after rebuilding the carburettor). Got broken into within 24 hours of getting it.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

All they took was a camping stove and an ancient canvas deck chair. Plus busting the quarter-light which I then couldn't afford to get fixed.

Blue Toyota Corona Mark II similar to the one pictured bellow. Bought it off a relative.

Passed my test in the Friday, in January. Reversed into sieve in a car park that afternoon, went round a bend in the snow the next morning, lost control and ended up going through a garden wall so a family friend panel beated it back into shape in the Sunday. Drive to work in the snow in the Monday and somebody wiped me out on another bend. Didn’t get the car back until three months later. Lively car though. But it didn’t handle very well. I remember driving with sone mates in3 afternoon and I took a corner too fast and it did a 180 degree spin. I didn’t say a word and carried on driving back in the direction we had started.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

It’d be worth an absolute fortune now. Sorry!

My first chariot was a 1970 Morris 1100 in ‘Bermuda Blue’. The bloke who sold it to me said it had ‘desert underseal’. I was young. It certainly had underseal - to cover the rust and the soft floor.

Went everywhere in it, broke down everywhere in it. It had a heater that sort of worked and that was your lot. No radio, but I had a cassette recorder and a few tapes so ICE was sorted.

I think the daftest thing I did with it was visiting my parents when they were in Torquay. A petrol shortage was on. The car only just made it on fumes. For the return, I refilled and my dad and I decided a bucket of petrol covered by a taped carrier bag would do the job. Well I did about 40 miles and was beginning to feel dizzy with the petrol fumes. Hard shoulder, M5. Hadn’t thought how to get the petrol from the bucket to the tank. I wound wearing most of it and the car and hard shoulder wearing the rest.

Made it back though!

My grandfather passed away shortly before my 17th birthday, grandma didn't drive, so it was I that was gifted his then 10 year old Renault 5.

I loved it. Nothing beats your first car, I had so many adventures in it from day 1 with school mates, trips over the summer, pottering around the back roads of Suffolk. Smoked in it, drank in it, shagged in it. I took it up to University with me too and managed to keep it on the road until a ripe old age.

I'd pay a lot of money to get that car back now.

A 1982 Triumph Acclaim in 1994-ish three months after passing my test.

Purchased privately from a guy in Sproughton. £200 quid cash.

Not the flashiest car but had electric windows (which in 1982 I'm guessing wasn't all that common?)

Reliable enough but certainly needed that choke on first start in the morning.
