Queen at Wembley! Not a bad start. INXS, The Alarm and Status Quo supporting. The latter two bands I saw a few times after too - Quo were unavoidable!
My gig habits these days couldn't be further from this gig, with much smaller venues being the norm.

I would have only been 14 then and would have never heard of them at that time - five years later The Neph were my favourite band but had just split up - shame because I only saw them live in their Nefilim iteration in around 96/97.
For me, Carter USM at Cambridge Corn Exchange May 92, just before my A Level exams was my first gig; swiftly followed by Pop Will Eat Itself at London Marquee in June 92 just after my exams (one of the five night mini-residency they did at the Marquee).
My main memory at the PWEI gig was this was probably about a year or two before barriers were put up at every venue and despite 3-4 security guards trying to stop people, the stream of stage divers was just nonstop. Pretty sure I crowd surfed a couple of time but I never made it to the stage. |
Yer my first woulda been CUSM or Wonder Stuff, Neds, Breeders or some if those early Grunge bands like Superchunk at Cambridge Corn Exchange or the Junction.
Theve all blended into 1 so can't remember which 1 came first. |  | | |

Maybe distant cousins, I never saw The Kinks, Eric Burdon and War or Atomic Rooster at rhe Pier but I did see Genesis, The Mick Abrahams Band, Glen Cornick's Wild Turkey, Arthur Brown and Supertramp there. Saw The Groundhogs at The Manor but I was pissed up and abused them from the crowd to the extent that I was taken upstairs by a roadie and given a talking to !
And I was at the infamous gig at The Baths where The Edgar Broughton Band left the stage after ten minutes because of electrical shocks and never came back. Also was at Zep and remember Gong, Camel, Stackridge, Focus, Stray and quite a few others fondly/
The Genesis / Caravan / Band called O triple bill at the Civic College was pretty impressive but again I fecked up seeing Caravan due to my pursuit of a girl way out of my league and attached to the local Frank Zappa look alike. Also Argent / Man /Skid Row (Gary Moore band not the American one) was wonderful, as was Heads Hands and Feet / The Pretty Things / Doctor Feelgood.
But at the time it felt like hardly any bands came to Ipswich... [Post edited 8 Dec 11:57]

The music venues in Ipswich were few.
The Gaumont and the Baths weren't used often enough.
Saw Elkie Brookes fronting Vinegar Joe at the Manor.
We traveled to Essex Uni for gigs and also Kings Cross Cinema all-night gigs on Fridays - Quintessence, Hawkwind, Kilburn and the High Roads, Gong.

Thinking back at around the same time some really decent bands were playing the Essex Uni,unfortunately I missed AC/DC as I was to young,but I did manage to see Ian Gillan,Motörhead and Girls school to name a couple. |
Mate went to that AC/DC one. Was filmed as part of the Beeb's "Rock Goes To College" series. Looked a good night. Wish I could have got there. Gillan was good. Always my drive home music after a night out. | | | |

Yup they aren't shifting CDs like they used to and Spotify pays sweet FA. Live is now the main source of income, esp including the expensive merch every fan needs to buy. |  |

A friend of mine saw Hawkwind around that time. He did know music & played guitar himself; he said it was the worst gig he'd attended - weird special effects with heavy rock played on top. |
I saw Hawkwind maybe five times from 1972 and 1974 and they were a pretty good live band in my experience, mind you I also found that my state of consciousness was quite altered by 'secondary smoke' at their gigs. Little did I know that a work colleague of the time, Alan Davey, would become Lemmy's replacement in the band. |  |
