Im just about to take my daughter to the Brixton Academy to see her favourite band The Last Dinner Party. Thats a great venue for a 1st timer. Mine was Shakin Stevens at the Ipswich Regent.

Gigs were WAY cheaper back then, even allowing for general inflation, but then the music industry model was completely different - the tour might be lucky to break even, but it was usually about promoting the new album, which could net £mmm.
And now, "name" artists can carry on for ever & play their greatest hits in front of 20,000 at the O2 & gross £2m+ per gig.

Bluesville at The Manor was 3/6. Saw loads of great bands there in the mid 60s. Spencer Davis was the best.

Yup they aren't shifting CDs like they used to and Spotify pays sweet FA. Live is now the main source of income, esp including the expensive merch every fan needs to buy.

I won't go near merchandise (same with endless new replica football shirts) but it's a free market & no one had to buy.
A friend of mine who is really into music always buys the tour T-shirt & he claims some, such as from distant Iron Maiden tours, are now worth far more than face value on EBay.

Yer my first woulda been CUSM or Wonder Stuff, Neds, Breeders or some if those early Grunge bands like Superchunk at Cambridge Corn Exchange or the Junction.

Theve all blended into 1 so can't remember which 1 came first.

Woulda also seen early version of Prodigy few times at The Barn around same time or slightly earlier. Though can't actually remember seeing um perform. Do remember Liam was very quiet and a bit of a nerd..

Pretty good venue. In my days of going often went there. Rather partial to a bit of metal and thrash.

My second was Motörhead at the same venue!

Ha, yes I did. My flatmate who was a big fan of the Macc Lads dragged me along to see them in Birmingham, would have been 1988. Probably about my 6th gig.
My 1st gig was Danielle Dax at Birmingham Burberries in late 1987.

Oddly, for someone who played in lots of bands and has had lots of periods of my life being very snobby about music, my first proper gig was The Eagles at Wembley in 1996. Went with my aunt who adored them, left rather bemused.

Must have been Jan 1978.

REM at Portman Road - must have been 2005ish.

A band i'd happily see live again at the same venue, if they ever properly reformed and toured.

Queen at Wembley! Not a bad start. INXS, The Alarm and Status Quo supporting. The latter two bands I saw a few times after too - Quo were unavoidable!

My gig habits these days couldn't be further from this gig, with much smaller venues being the norm.

BTW did anyone catch Rival Sons at Ipswich Corn Exchange this year?

I saw Hawkwind maybe five times from 1972 and 1974 and they were a pretty good live band in my experience, mind you I also found that my state of consciousness was quite altered by 'secondary smoke' at their gigs. Little did I know that a work colleague of the time, Alan Davey, would become Lemmy's replacement in the band.

Motorhead often used to turn up as the replacement band at West Runton Pavilion I seem to remember. Once notably when Al Stewart couldn't make it.

All us hippies sitting cross-legged on the floor waiting for folky Al, when the PA announces "Sadly Al Stewart cannot make it tonight, but instead, for you we have MOTORHEAD"

Great night.

I used to go fishing all the time with his Dad and brothers, and him occasionally. His Mum and Dad used to run the bakers on Queensway and Irene became well known among ITFC supporters. His brother Andrew also rode for Ipswich Witches.

Saw Ned's at the LCR. They were dreadful.

That was a terrible night for other reasons as well.

Technically The Lightening Seeds at Margate Winter gardens, but that was a University Summer Ball. Dedicated gig would probably have been Franz Ferdinand (maybe supported by Keane or similar) at the Astoria.

Harsh, but not everyone's cuppa I guess. They did put on a great show that's for sure. I saw them in later years after Freddie was gone, with Paul Rodgers. That was great too - I wish he'd stuck with them.
