There's also the BBC Christmas Appeal which since 1927 has raised funds for St Martin-in-the Field.
The funds are divided equally between The Connection at St Martin's, which supports vulnerable and homeless people in central London, and the Vicar's Relief Fund, which makes grants, averaging £200, to people anywhere in the UK who are at risk of homelessness or with experience of being homeless.
The work of St. Martin's with the homeless date backs to WW1 when troops were sent back for a rest from the front but were often left stuck in London. I myself volunteered at the Connection back in the 1990s.
Yes its right to be appalled about it. Homelessness in Britain is at ridiculous levels considering we are the world's 6th biggest economy. Social housing stocks have been decimated and even young working people are struggling to buy homes. It makes me angry. FYI I have been homeless myself and I have also given back in terms of helping out charities like Emmaus and going out distributing sandwiches in the town centre, considering myself fortunate to have pulled myself out of that situation. What irks me is people virtue signalling about it and then having a dig at others. If you're doing FA to help then you're no more effecitvely helping than someone who doesn't care.
So you are saying that there are real practical things we can all do to help people other than a daily dose of virtue signalling on a provincial football team's message board?

There is. For relatively peanuts as well.
Don't wish to be a virtue signalling w@nker but I love this site https://www.goodgifts.org/all-gifts Discovered it on MSE so it's legit. When you see the things a small amount of money can buy it's so depressing that some people have billions.
I don’t like uncontrolled immigrants pouring into the country though.
If that makes me a ‘racist’then so be it.
You're not a racist IMO. You play the character of a racist on here and the same people take the bait but I don't believe you're a racist in the real world.
Anyone remember when the country managed to house the homeless during Covid?
The majority of those classed as homeless in the UK are in temporary accommodation, not living on the streets. So they would have been in temporary accommodation during covid.
Like Clive says, the UK has ne of the highest rates of homelessness in Europe. but not the highest rate of people living on the streets. Germany, Portugal, Belgium and Czechia have a much higher rate of rough sleepers.

Not a dig at you but I've never really liked the term rough sleepers, because it kind of glosses over the fact that these people don't have anywhere during the day, either.

I don't see any virtue signalling in this thread, I see someone shocked at the stats and then someone else denying them and then belittling them. To me that's wrong. Whether people do their bit to help or don't (you have no idea what other people do for charity, or what ability they have to do so) is beside the point.

I could write you an essay about charities that essentially deal with symptoms rather than the underlying broken systems that lead to the need for them. In fact many of them do more for making those that benefit from said broken system feeling better about themselves than actually fixing anything. However I thought you might enjoy listening to this more....

I should hope not as he has relatives that invaded (I'm sorry, I mean who were pioneers in) other countries in boats!

Sorry if I've misremembered or even shouldn't remember, but aren't you the guy that did a lot of work on homelessness way back? Did you sleep on the streets near LS for a while even? I've just got a memory of reading a diary of those experiences or something...
(Apols if misjudged or plain wrong)
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Why do you downvote any poster that disagrees with you by the way?
