| What would you do for 3rd ashes test? 13:51 - Dec 13 with 4454 views | itfc1108 | Obviously have to pick from players we have out there, which is very limiting. It's outrageous that players like Ben Foakes and Jack Leach have been discarded, and to an extent a player like Sam Cook, who would have done what Neser did in the last test. There are so many players who deserve to be dropped, but that's probably a topic, for another day. For this test, I would drop Smith. Very poor at the moment with the bat and behind the stumps, and offers virtually no encouragement or noise to bowlers or captain. I grew up on hearing Alec Stewart and Jack Russell chipping away all game. I would give the gloves to Pope and move him down the order to ease pressure on him. He seems too jittery to be a number 3. Bethell in at 3. Tounge and Potts in for Carse and Atkinson to pitch it up, and stop obsession of the constant short pitched bowling. I would keep Jacks for his batting and off spin (and fielding!), My last choice would be between Archer, and Bashir, depending on the pitch, but would lean towards Archer, with Bashir's poor form, and that Root land Bethell can turn their arms over. Z.Crawley B.Duckett J.Bethell J.Root H.Brook O.Pope (w) B.Stokes (c) W.Jacks M.Potts J.Archer J.Tounge [Post edited 13 Dec 13:53]

Labuschagne gone. Really need to get another 2 or 3 quickly. And get Carey early as well. That bloke is a pain in the arse for us coming in at 7 when we think we're getting through them.

I think it is only the revenue created by travelling English fans that is keeping these Ashes series' at 5 tests.

More so Mitchell Starc. He's in the team for his bowling but his Test batting average is over 20 & unlike our bowlers, he doesn't seem to throw away his wicket (Oh dear, I'm sounding like Sir Geoffrey).

I think most of us expected it to last more than 10 days. The ECB should be thoroughly ashamed of their approach to test match cricket. Even the Aussies are decrying the lack of competition.

Jofra is averaging 33 with the bat this series. Problem is, Root is the only Englishman with a higher one.

And his and Stokes' bowling is always going to suffer for hours spent batting on the hottest of days. Root, Archer and Stokes feel like the only players to have turned up, need a few more than that to make it competitive. And the post play bollox from the coaching staff (including Stokes after Perth) is getting more annoying by the day. Yesterday the spin coach quizzed who thought the Ashes were over.... Embarrassing on and off the field tbh [Post edited 19 Dec 21:40]

Whole thing has been a shitshow, sadly. Not unpredictable though, we were fortunate against India in the summer. I feel I might be well off with my 3-1 defeat forecast. Reckon everything will change after this.

I used to get to the oval a few times a summer but don’t manage it these days. Canterbury is my local ground now. That is a retirement objective though.

Bad news: - That partnership lasted 8 balls.

That was the point I turned it off. Duckett wafting at a chest high ball at that stage when we're batting to save the game was enough for me.

The fall-out will be interesting. Bethell will probably replace Pope for the next Test, but that's like moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic. The brain dead approach to batting must lead people to question McCullum's approach, but he has an ECB contract until the end of 2027. You could also question Stokes's captaincy as he seems to have gone along with the approach, although maybe his patient 83 in the first innings was his way of making a point. Not just the batting though - after a promising show by the bowlers in the first Australian innings of the series, they've been wayward (Archer & Stokes excepted) & obsessed with banging the ball in short.
