Not a chance of top 2 16:22 - Dec 13 with 1179 viewsIP1Blue

We’re not consistent enough.

Our general play has been so far below par all season.

Jack Taylor was our 4th choice and 5th choice in midfield in last 2 seasons and now is starting games, fair enough he was good in a couple but the last couple of games shows why he was 4th and 5th choice.

Hirst and Azon are not good enough and that’s now a fact after 20 games.

Away from home we look a different team.

And if we go behind, it almost feels as if we’ve got no chance of winning a game. A complete opposite to our previous promotion team. If the going gets tough. We crumble which is a massive concern.

Play offs is the maximum we can get.

Yeah agree think its a top 6 battle rather than top 2.

Weve half a top two squad half a competitive one.

So on that basis, that is a big fail from McKenna, given that we probably have the most expensive squad in this league.

I've seen enough of us home and away this season to know that we're not good enough for automatic promotion.

And hirst is hirst non existent,
Central defenders have it to easy,

Absolute bollox.

Eight points off second spot - next week we have Sheff W which is an extremely winnable match and Boro have Bristol City.

Out of our hands at the moment but giving up on automatic with over twenty matches still to play for is ridiculous.

We went through a spell of being poor at home. We then pick up six points from six.

In meantime, our away form, which had improved has become nothing short of awful again.

Very inconsistent. Very average. Being so far from top two isn’t good enough with the investment.

I reckon we need 90pts for automatic promotion. That means taking 56 from the remaining 25 games or 2.24 points/game. That seems unlikely given that we are currently averaging 1.6 points/game. Town seems as inconsistent as ever.

Precisely, I just don't see the team suddenly clicking and what's the betting we buy 4 new players in January to cause more lineup disruption.

Has anyone given up on it or just said it's looking very unlikely from what we've seen this season?

Exactly. Would love to see the form. But we need 3 results from every 4 games. We are getting 2 out of every 4. That’s better than most teams in this league, but it’s playoffs.

Hope to be proven totally wrong and we win 8 in a row now. 😂

Too early to say that. A lot can happen and some clubs have weaker squads which will cause issues when injuries and bans kick in

Boro and Coventry have had some injuries already and have managed it well. We haven’t took advantage of our squad yet and have just been chopping and changing every week. We also have had minimal injuries so far apart from Szmodics.

This first half of the season has been nothing short of messy

Took us 37 games to lose 5 games when we previously went up and have already lost 5 this season after 21 games.

I honestly think the squad is unbalanced and overrated. I hope I get proven wrong but on current viewing I don’t think I will.

Can you see a surging winning run with this kind of away form? Nine points before new years and we can talk but that would be two tough away wins. Striker required asap in January.

Do you honestly think there’s a chance of top 2 with how we’ve played this season and with our squad?

Hirst and Azon are not good enough IMO

The ‘10’ position is an issue - Omari and Chaplin were our 10s last time and now we have Szmodics and Akpom which are completely different player profiles.

RW - £13m Mcateer was benched even though Walker Egeli was missing today, that says IMO says a lot about that signing

CM - Taylor who was our 4/5th choice in the last 2 years is now our starting CM. Nunez having to play in the ‘10’ due to not recruiting well enough in that position leaves us short here. Cajuste not being as effective because there is no space to run into with us no longer putting 10 men behind the ball and being able to counter attack. Azor having no real cover has hurt us well.

LB - Davis being asked to not overlap as much and play inverted is just mind boggling considering how effective he was at doing it. Again no real cover for him

The last 2/3 transfer windows have been big muck ups and how we’ve been left with such an unbalanced squad is the biggest crime here. The player profiles in each position that made us so effective are the opposite of what we have now.

Yep. Recruitment is quite clearly the main issue here.

Just one example is RW, we brought a player for millions that we are loaning to divisional rival and another in the same position for 12M that is performing so poorly we play a left winger out of position to compensate, even when the starter is out. I liked the late move on Sindre as I thought the ceiling would be really high but I don’t like the fund allocation to one position when we have Hirst and Azon as striker options.

It’s unbalanced and scattergun. Far too many misses over two years and it’s unsurprising at times we look like a team of individuals.

Coventry lost 3-0 to us. After Christmas is when it tends to kick in so will see how their squads fare then, but I suspect both will drop points

Indeed -we are definitely a team of more in-tune to individual excellence than solid team work. And to be honest, it’s not good enough considering how much money the club has spent.

But despite this, we are only eight points off second spot. Easily achievable but for the money spent this position isn’t good enough.

The next four matches are important -really hopeful that we get at least nine points from those matches.

Questions should be asked regarding recruitment.

35m spent on the left side, 38m spent on the right side of midfield and our wingers still arguably lack variety and genuine width.

That's outrageous spending at this level.

Onus is on Ashton, who talks a good one when all is well but vanishes at times like this.

Our recruitment has been piss poor for the past few transfer windows with the same few positions found wanting and yet nothing has been done or we get our pants pulled by other clubs buying / loaning overpriced dross from them.

Leicester signed 0 players in the summer and yet they made us with our new multi-million £ signings look shite.

Ashton seems more interested in being promoting PR as some mega event destination and rubbing shoulders with celebrities than focusing on his main job - football. Priorities all wrong.
