Remember our league one side when we went up, not as good as this current team, but was really easy to like them, they just seemed a proper team. Don’t know what the solution is, throw more money at the squad? Probably not.

You go back to the promo team, quick attacking passes to burns from chappers, burns running on and getting the ball in now it's slow, pass pass pass, turn inside, lose the ball

| This team isn’t very likable is it? on 09:13 - Dec 14 with 1505 views | Herbivore | People didn't like our League 1 team much in the few weeks before McKenna took over. Fans like winning teams, we grew to love that team over the insane League 1 run in when we were battering teams all over the shop but there wasn't a lot of love away at Cambridge just before that run or at Bristol Rover, quite the opposite in fact. The 18 months of good times that followed built that bond. Virtually everyone from that side has left and we've not had the good times yet with the new team, maybe we never will. But if you look at some of the abuse Hirst is getting you'll see that whether fans love or hate players and teams is down to results first and foremost, he was a big part of a group that was loved and now he's one of the main targets now we're not doing so well. | |

Lads, lads, lads. We spanked the runaway leaders 3-0 a week ago. You weren't complaining this team was unlikeable then. 2 defeats in the last 11, the latest due to two freak goals. Get a grip.

O’Shea is a ways short of that, although I do think Matusiwa has been a good Sam replacement, I think the inconsistency shows we’re still “gelling” but I know what you mean about “not very likeable”, it’s all slow and vanilla with the odd glimmer of real quality, a given with how much we’ve spent. Is this down to the managers KMc though? Talks of a big January, for sure there needs to be some strategic signings because “big money signings” have shown it doesn’t get results (so far). Still a long way to go. A few back to back wins and we’re up there. [Post edited 14 Dec 9:19]

| This team isn’t very likable is it? on 09:18 - Dec 14 with 1446 views | CopfordBlue | With so much churn in modern football it’s unusual to get a team that stick together long enough and produce memories to make them likeable. In terms of likability this team is on a par with most we’ve had in the last 20 years. What this team illustrates is how much we loved the back to back team. They were a special group and provided lifelong memories. They weren’t at the level in terms of ability as the 70s and early 80s teams, arguably nor were they as good as the teams that have given us brief success since but in terms of being loved and being fondly remembered for decades, they were as good we we’ve had. Those 2 seasons were special. I doubt we’ll have a time as enjoyable as that again, most fans go a lifetime without experiencing it. | |

i've got a grip, just having a discussion with the op flash. We didn't spank the league leaders flash, yes we scored 3 goals and the scoreline suggest as such, but we didn't. it doesn't matter as we won likewise 2 losses in 11 is a great stat. But the performances, the speed of play, the patterns, the drive, it's just not there imo. Not enough to see us go on a run of probably 6/7 wins on the bounce to have a chance of finishing top 2. lots of games left, but i don't have the trust in this group to do 'that run' that we did in 23 which i think falls inline with wallys op.. that love isn't quite there, although it is with azor, i love him.

I don't believe our players are that slow, or are doing it on purpose. Its purely coaching but WHY? Taking ages for a free kick, 30 seconds for a throw in, allowing the opposition to get back and defend in numbers. Also we seem reluctant to go forward, how many times in the past 3 matches Szmodics was waving at one of his teammates to make the forward pass, yet lo and behold they choose to pass backwards. WHY? Even when we are trailing or drawing in the dying moments of the game, there is still no urgency to push forward and attack. Players strolling over to take free kicks or throw ins. Most of the defence and MF players even Matusiwa love to slow the game down, and pass backwards again at a speed even my grandmother can run. WHY? Even bottom teams like Oxford and Blackburn play the ball on the ground much faster than us, use the long ball to break away and show some level of improvisation, intent and aggressiveness that the most expensive squad in the entire EFL doesn't seem to have. WHY? When fans watch such pedestrian football coupled with inconsistent results (a major c0ck up / Sunday league performance guaranteed every 2-3 matches) compared to the back-to-back squad or the free hit season in the PL of course the current squad doesn't look very likeable. I get that, but like any player if he plays well he'll get support, just like they'll lap it up when he scores. Unfortunately, crowds are full of very loud types, even know I can come across a negative ninny sometimes, when i go to footy just like i did when i had my st, i never transferred that negativity into being vocal, that's not me, and i don't condone it, however the only way to stop that is by individually performing. the team could lost 4-1 each game, but if he held the ball up, sprayed it around, did a good job those stupid jeers imo wouldn't be so vocal.

If that team hadn't won the vast majority of its games and been promoted two years on the bounce we wouldn't be lauding the lads lads lads. If they hadn't got out of league One, or struggled in the champ. Similarly if this team scrapes a promotion via the play offs or even town slip back a bit in a few seasons we will revise it all and remember Jadens goals and the potential of Egeli and Nunez taking the p1ss out of the budgies and reminisce. None of which is to say we are doing as well as we should be, but I don't think there is any world in which we do what we are doing now and anyone says that they are a great likeable bunch of lads. One goes with the other.

The fact that many of our players (and manager) polarise the fans' opinion between hero/zero, Rolls-Royce/Renault 14, saviour/scapegoat suggest that collectively we are desperate to love them all but find it difficult to do so consistently. Groups of fans and crowds are not known for expressing nuanced reasoning or balanced opinion very well, that's why it's difficult to have a discussion without being accused of targeting someone. This is football.

It's a great result and not one to belittle, but I wouldn't take it further and use it as some form of look we've made it. like me and you also discussed about stoke, on one hand good professional game, but was incredibly slow and pedestrian again. like coventry was until 2nd half like hull was until 70 minutes like yesturady was in general Town are at it's at speed, even this new group are. but we rarely see it. You talk about reactionary posting, I see it different. I see the opposites where performances in general are ignored and like you have with this one, use that as a bases to kinda say everythings fine. We've had a collection, Oxford, hull, blackburn, leicester in this block, majority of those games, incredibly low level of performance. As i said last night, i expected a loss to coventry, so this weeks points total is in line with what I had hoped, so i've got no issue with the points return, it's the lack of general performance and the 1 step forward 2 back we seem to have. We have a core of a top 2 team, with a fair few mid range champ players. Jan is a chance to bridge those gaps imo and needed.

But one breeds the other. Are you saying that you confidently predicted that run in 23 because they were a great bunch of lads? Or that if they went on a run now they wouldn't become heroes who we love? Style of play and performance don't matter in terms of love and hero status, especially a whole team, maybe the odd player like Gio. I just think we're in danger of adding to the criticism for the sake of it. It's not '... and they're not a very likeable bunch', it's 'because of the situation and the results we haven't yet fallen in love with them'. Completely different IMO.

If I could be arsed I'd dig up some threads from February 2023 when people were turning on McKenna and the players and consigning us to the play offs. The idea that we had faith in that team at that point to go on the run they went on and then go back to back the following season is pure revisionism.

Sigh. The TWTD Staw Man comes out again. Nowhere have I suggested beating Cov 3-0 means "we've made it" or "everything's fine". Yes, improvements can be made. Loads of them. We certainly need to be quicker, in thought and in movement. That's different from absolutely losing our sh!t, wanting the manager out, saying the recrutement's been terrible (not saying you, but a lot of the vibe on here today). Everyone needs to calm the F down. This place will be the complete opposite again in a week's time. That alone suggests it's reactionary posting.

Yeah i would have been promotion from league 1 was minimum expectation. I do agree with herbz though and the other fella that the run was predicted - it wasn't However because we saw it, and because we saw what it took and we saw the desire to get back into games being 0-1 almost like it was a gift to the opposition, when you review it, that group had guts so it made sense how they managed it. Reviewing that period against the current where we struggle to get back into games, struggle to control games, etc it's a far cry from either of our two promotion teams. I think it's completely fair to say that. [Post edited 14 Dec 9:59]
