Possibly because they are embarrassed at moment Just arrived at the station to come home to hear “Blue Army” from about 6 lads who have just arrived here. Love it. [Post edited 19 Dec 15:39]

But this week, driving round the town etc, it's really different compared to 20 odd years ago what's the town centre itself like nowadays?

| Norwich. As a City on 18:43 - Dec 19 with 958 views | Churchman | I like Norwich, the city. It is a lot better than Ipswich. But we were in Ipswich the other week and it was ok. Plenty of empty shops and a bit distressed but better than a good number of others I’ve been to this year. The problem for town centres is rents for the shops, traffic and parking fees. Why bother going in when just about everything you want is online or on the outskirts with easy free parking to boot? Ipswich has plenty of characterful building still - like many places and things in this run down decaying country, it needs investment. Shame investment is a dirty word. | | | |

I think the less said about Ipswich Town centre the better. Not quite as bad a Haverhill, but getting there. Since Debenhams closed and it's been left empty all that's left are coffee shops, card shops, Marks and Spencer and primark along with a sports store. Whilst Norwich is quite spread out as a City it has a lot more to offer than Ipswich. I would go so far as to say Bury St. Edmunds is probably better than Ipswich.

Agree with all of this. No argument that Norwich is a better place for shopping etc, but it's a very Ipswich people thing to do down our town, and it is better than it gets credit for. There are lots of interesting independent shops down St Nicholas/St Peters Street, as well as others dotted around the town. Yeah, the main high street isn't the best, but that's the result of the big store offering moving out of town or online, as you identify. People grumble that there are loads of coffee shops and cafes, but that's what people do these days.

What I don't understand is why the massive area that is retail premises in Ipswich isn't drastically reduced, with shops converted to affordable flats? It makes sense, but that is clearly in short supply in political avenues.

I thought the old Co-op building was being converted to a school but there seemed to be no sign of that happening when I was down there a few weeks ago. Does anyone know if that is still happening? Norwich city centre has always been an exceptionally nice place to visit. Comparing Ipswich to it is a bit unfair really. Having said that, despite the absolutely dire main shopping street in Ipswich (how many vape shops and mobile phone/phone accessory shops does one town need?!), the rest of the town centre and the waterfront/Christchurch and Holywells parks are far from awful.

| Norwich. As a City on 10:15 - Dec 20 with 351 views | BlueandTruesince82 | I love Norwich as a city. Having grown up just outside I have to say it's become far more vibrant than it was when I was a kid. Think itsvgreat for shopping, food, pubs. Try to get back once a year of so and it puts a smile on my face when I do. It feels like a busting city, not dying like many others in the UK. If it were up to me I'd move back there in an instant bur Mrs B&T thinks its a bit too far and remote from the family, which I guess it is. It's a bigger than Ipswich bur the football club will never be bigger, they will always be a won nothing alsoran club. No heritage, no history. Nothing but a Jeremy Goss volley. Fabulous city though | |

| Norwich. As a City on 11:20 - Dec 20 with 220 views | Herbivore | Norwich is a lovely city. Good independent shops and pubs, lots going on for a city of its size (don't think it's much bigger than Ipswich overall) but it is let down by a shit football team with delusional six fingered fans, many of whom come from the badlands outside the fine city. Ipswich has suffered like many similar size towns from the death of the high street and lack of investment. That said, it's nowhere near as bad as some make out. I've taken Norwich-based friends to Ipswich plenty of times and they've always enjoyed it and said it's a nice place and far better than they'd expected it to be. The Waterfront and the streets running there from the town, plus Christchurch Park area could be transported to almost any town or city and would immediately improve it. Plus Ipswich is home to the finest football team the world has ever seen. | |
